Biography
WHAT? Like Hulk Hogan, Steve Austin will go down as one of the most popular
mainstream wrestling stars in history. Austin defined "WWF Attitude" during the
late 1990's and continued to be a huge superstar in the new millennium.
Steve Austin, who was trained by "Gentleman" Chris Adams, worked his way up from
the indy circuit like most other wrestlers. Austin had a brief run in USWA
before joining World Championship in 1991. Austin, who had long blonde hair at
the time, was known as "Stunning" Steve Austin. Austin had his most success in
WCW as a member of the popular "Hollywood Blondes" tag-team with the late Brian
Pillman. Austin also held the Television Title and United States Title during
his WCW tenure.
In 1995, WCW head Eric Bischoff fired Austin for two main reasons: Austin was
injured and Bischoff didn't think Austin could be a huge draw. Austin would soon
prove Bischoff wrong when it came to drawing. After a short stint in ECW, Austin
joined the World Wrestling Federation. Austin was initially managed by Ted
DiBiase and was called The Ringmaster. Shortly after debuting, Austin shaved his
head and became "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. Ted DiBiase left the WWF a few months
later and Austin's career took off. Austin won the 1996 King Of The Ring and
feuded with Bret Hart into 1997. Austin, who was a heel that broke all the
rules, soon became a major fan favorite. Austin, who sweared, attacked anybody
in sight, and drank beer, became the WWF's biggest breakout star during 1997.
Austin won the WWF World Title in 1998, and raised hell in the WWF. The Steve
Austin/Vince McMahon rivalry caused business to skyrocket. Austin's neck, which
was injured from an Owen Hart piledriver, need surgery in 2000. Austin made a
return by the fall of 2000 and looked better than ever. Austin turned on the WWF
and joined the WCW/ECW Alliance stable in 2001, but his "heel turn" was not a
success. Austin became a fan-favorite again in 2002, having the crowd chant
"WHAT?" after every word he said.
Austin became unhappy with the WWE during 2002, and walked out on the company
twice the day of a live RAW taping. The second time he walked out, he was not
welcomed back. Austin has been suspended from the company ever since that
incident.
