Davey Richards Talks Slammiversary, TNA’s Direction, House Shows, Tag Teams & More

TNA star Davey Richards joined the Talk TNA Podcast following the Slammiversary pay-per-view and spoke on a variety of topics. Check out some of the highlights below:

Slammiversary and not defending the tag titles: I think the original intention was a tag title match but the plans were changed and I’m glad they were. It was something different for me because you know people don’t know while we are a successful tag team, we’ve also been successful singles wrestlers so we go to show that. Also we don’t just want to throw away tag title defenses, we want them to mean something and have viable challengers which I’m sure in the future will change.

Almost signing with WWE: To be honest and I’ve been saying this for years, I have no desire to go to WWE. I have nothing against their product. Those guys there are great they run a great show but I’m not somebody that going to dedicate their whole life to pro wrestling. I love pro wrestling and I love being Davey Richards but I also love being Wes Richards, the firefighter and paramedic and that’s why I quit new Japan and that’s why I didn’t sign with WWE. It’s like TNA’s the perfect place form me because I can do my wrestling and come home and do my other job that I love just as much.

TNA’s recent UK tour: We had a blast. I always love coming over to the UK. I’ve been doing it sine I first started on the Indy’s and to start out our TNA career over there was just awesome.

Low attendance at TNA House Shows: It’s been spoken about but honestly I like the most none professional professional wrestler. I like getting in the ring and doing my thing and I would prefer for there to be more people there but I’m going to work just as hard in front of 400 people as I do 4000. We always want more people there front and center and from a business standpoint but there’s a lot of restructuring going on in TNA and I think it’s all up hill from here.

TNA being more storyline than wrestling based lately: I’m obviously not a booker or producer for a reason but just my personal opinion, I’m always going to lean more towards wrestling. I turn on a wrestling show to see wrestling and I know there has to be storylines and I get that but I think people are really going to be pleased with the direction TNA is gonna start going in because we’re gonna start focusing more on that and Slammiversary was the start. We’ve got a roster of guys that can really go in the ring and are gonna showcase that now. I’m excited.

Current state of tag team wrestling in TNA: I know me and Eddie have had success as single competitors but first and foremost we are the Wolves and would love to stay a tag team for the rest of our careers. For us the more tag team the better for obvious reasons. That’s just the logistics of wrestling. Guys come and they go and then you’ll take two guys and pair them up thinking it won’t go anywhere and then it’s amazing. Then two guys you think were born to tag together doesn’t work out so you never really know. TNA has some good tag team stuff coming up so i’m excited for it.

How TNA can grow their audience: I think the sky’s the limit with the talent we have. It just takes one thing to catch fire. I really think it’s gonna grow leaps and bounds because we’re gonna focus a lot more on in-ring style or in ring wrestling.
