Death of Wrestling: AWOL

Greetings to all… It’s David Davis with my weekly blog: Death of Wrestling. For all of those who read this regularly, you will know that this is not a blog about bashing wrestling; it’s a blog of a frustrated fan, who loves the business and wishes that each week it could be a little better.

It wasn’t that long ago – at least it doesn’t feel like that long ago – when CM Punk dropped his pipe bomb, won the WWE title and then went AWOL with it… I remember thinking that the WWE missed a trick by not having Punk stay off TV for a while and actually defend the title in other companies. I know it’d benefit the other company more than WWE, what with all the added exposure etc, but a company like RoH isn’t a threat to the WWE, so I think they could have given them the rub to really sell the storyline.

Apparently, I wasn’t the only one as TNA have lifted that storyline, kitchen sink and all, and sent AJ Styles off on his magical mystery tour. This is everything that I wanted with the storyline, so I should be over the moon, but… I’m not… for two reasons…

Firstly, I’m not a fan of TNA ripping off WWE storylines. Now I know that there are only a handful of stories and to some degree anything we do in the modern entertainment era will have been done before – you only need to look at the South Park episode ‘The Simpsons Already Did it’ to know this. But up until now, TNA had largely taken the high ground. WWE blatantly ripped off The Beautiful People gimmick and the opening recap voiceover, but that’s okay because ‘The Man’ always steals the little guy’s ideas, passes them off as their own and ultimately, largely due to money, does the idea better. BUT we KNOW where the idea originally came from…

The problem with TNA ripping off ideas from the WWE is that they just don’t have the money or the resources to do the idea as well as the WWE. What they end up with is an idea we KNOW isn’t theirs that’s executed badly… And that’s not what TNA needs.

Secondly, and I know I said I wanted this, but I actually don’t think the elongated storyline works. People often say that the audience is stupid and we don’t know what we really want, and unfortunately on this occasion, I have to agree… The longer that AJ’s been away, the less and less I’ve cared about the storyline. The WWE bringing Punk back so soon kept his red hotness, well, red hot… Which is something AJ needs.

I try to watch iMPACT when it airs over here and stay away from the spoilers, but I have read the following – SPOILER ALERT – AJ Styles returns to lose the title to Magnus, and his contract may well have expired too! This is just another example of the DoW. TNA in all of its infinite wisdom sends AJ off whilst he’s red hot… In the meantime, they build on the storyline, hoping that we’ll eagerly anticipate his return… only… they can’t come to terms on a contract so the last few months of programming has been a calamitous waste of our time… Nice TNA… Nice…

That’s all folks… As always, post your comments, thoughts and opinions below! Or message me on twitter and let me know what you think the ‘Death of Wrestling’ is and I might just blog about it!!! Peace and I’m out…
