Death of Wrestling: Last Knockout Standing

Greetings to all… It’s David Davis with my weekly blog: Death of Wrestling. For all of those who read this regularly, you will know that this is not a blog about bashing wrestling; it’s a blog of a frustrated fan, who loves the business and wishes that each week it could be a little better.

You all know – well if you read this thing regularly – that I’m a fan of all facets of wrestling. I don’t agree with the WWE policy that people only pay to see John Cena vs. HHH. Of course I could be wrong, but I honestly believe that people pay for the whole PPV card and so every match should be of main event quality…

It’s been a long time since the WWE had truly exceptional women’s matches – I don’t mean truly exceptional Divas as I think they have more than a few of those – but the sort of women’s wrestling that can garner mainstream attention…

Of course, this is not a surprise to most of the best women wrestlers in the business today because they took their ball and went home… alright not home… but to TNA… I’m talking about Tara, Mickie James, Miss Tessmacher, Gail Kim and Taryn Terrell… Wait a minute… did I just say Taryn Terrell…

For those of you who don’t remember, Taryn Terrell was known as Tiffany in the WWE and spent most of her time as the General Manager (or Assistant General Manager) for the ECW brand. She had a limited run as a singles competitor before being suspended for a reported incident with her real life husband Drew Macintyre. The WWE decided to side with Drew (don’t laugh – he was handpicked by Vinny Mac to be the next WWE champion) and they gave Tiffany her marching orders…

It took some time, but obviously the WWE’s loss was the wrestling world’s gain as Tiffany became Taryn and within the backdrop of TNA’s Slammiversary, along with Gail Kim, put on one of the best and most talked about women’s matches of recent times. These two women were given a ball and boy did they run with it. The match was physical, with a great story and beautifully executed…

I do have to just say, however, that personally, I had a problem with this match being used for a feud when the belt wasn’t even involved. I don’t think any feud should be more important than the belt, or what’s the point in being champion…

WWE is guilty of this too where a match like HHH vs. Brock Lesnar will headline the card and the championship is the co-main event. As far as I’m concerned, being the champion makes you the main event and if they don’t see you as a main eventer then they shouldn’t be giving you the most important strap in the company… Or it’s the DoW…

But this blog is about praising Gail Kim and Taryn Terrell for the match, not about highlighting some weird booking decisions by their employers. It’s not their fault that TNA decided their match was more important than seeing the Knockouts’ title defended on PPV, but it is their fault that the match was so good everyone’s talking about it…

That’s all folks… As always, post your comments, thoughts and opinions below! Or message me on twitter and let me know what you think the ‘Death of Wrestling’ is and I might just blog about it!!! Peace and I’m out…
