Death of Wrestling: Cardiac Arrest

Skull Cans

Greetings to all… It’s David Davis with my weekly blog: Death of Wrestling. For all of those who read this regularly, you will know that this is not a blog about bashing wrestling; it’s a blog of a frustrated fan, who loves the business and wishes that each week it could be a little better.

In recent weeks the wrestling world has been abuzz with their thoughts on one major incident: CM Punk and Paul Heyman’s mocking of Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler’s heart attack… The majority of comments have been fairly negative, and before I go any further, I would just like to point out that I didn’t personally think it was the benchmark of decency either… But at the same time, I don’t think the WWE should have been criticized for it and here’s why:

WWE13 has garnered a lot of love for the simple fact that it heavily features the Attitude Era. Most armchair critics tend to hold that era of professional wrestling as the single most defining era of all time. But isn’t this the era when DX were known for pushing the boundries of decency? Or even better, didn’t Vince keep Linda heavily sedated after her nervous breakdown so he could have an affair with Trish Stratus??? How freakin’ decent is that???

I’m not one to blindly defend the WWE, but surely this is a clear case of damned if they do and damned if they don’t. The majority of people hate the PG Era and are longing for the return of the great days of old, but when the WWE does something a little edgy, everyone complains… Us fans need to decide what we really want or the WWE will cause the DOW just trying to please everyone…

Personally, I didn’t have a problem with segment purely because Jerry was personally involved in it. If he thinks it’s okay, then it’s okay with me – in a similar fashion to Linda being okay with the drug induced stupor. I think we should all thank our lucky stars that The King survived the heart attack in the first place, which is what gave the WWE the chance to mock it. LONG LIVE THE KING!!!

Life of Wrestling: 371… which by my calculations is how long CM Punk has been WWE champion as of today. It’s not just that I’m a CM Punk fan (which I am), but this reign and the focus they are putting on it is a sign that the WWE are actually putting some thought in to the longevity of their stories, which for my money can only be a good thing.

That’s all folks… As always, post your comments, thoughts and opinions below! Or message me on twitter and let me know what you think the ‘Death of Wrestling’ is and I might just blog about it!!! Peace and I’m out…
