Death of Wrestling: DOW 2012

Skull Cans

Greetings to all… It’s David Davis with my weekly blog: Death of Wrestling. For all of those who read this regularly, you will know that this is not a blog about bashing wrestling; it’s a blog of a frustrated fan, who loves the business and wishes that each week it could be a little better.

As it’s the end of the world… sorry… year… I thought I’d look back over 2012 and pinpoint what I consider to be the biggest nail in the coffin for Professional Wrestling. I’ve written a fair few blogs this year and it was good fun looking back over them. From the WMD to Alisha Ceraso and even the state of Tag Team Wrestling, I’ve gone in on the wrestling world, but for my DOW 2012 I’m going to focus on the one man who truly deserves it: JTG…

What’s that I hear you scream ‘money, money, yeah, yeah – money, money, yeah, yeah’… Or should that be ‘millions of dollars’… It doesn’t take Shad Gaspard to point out a blatant rip off of a gimmick that’s almost as bad as The Beautiful People – sorry, I meant Flawless. But the Death of Wrestling is not the unashamed plagiarism of gimmicks that will always be rife, and actually forces each individual wrestler to be better. No, this blog is about the undercarders, people who might as well be called the Brooklyn Brawler, but to be precise, it’s about a 3 hour Raw being the Death of Wrestling…

How on Earth did I get from JTG to the 3 hour Raw??? It’s simple. When the 3 hour Raw was announced, unlike most, I welcomed it – my mind whirred with the possibility. I totally get that a 2 hour Raw must open and close with either CM Punk, Daniel Bryan or John Cena. I also know that they will be the main event, so that’s a good portion of an hour taken up with them and their respective feuds right there… with all the merchandising/advertising spots, and the other major feuds from Smackdown, it doesn’t leave that much room to develop the undercard. But a 3 hour Raw, that has so much possibility… Man was I mistaken…

The 3 hour Raw is just the two hour Raw with more recaps, advertising spots and endless ‘moments ago’ segments. What is the point? I’ll tell you – there isn’t one – yep, I said it – THERE ISN’T ONE. So what’s this got to do with JTG? Well, earlier in the year he dared to speak out, to give a ‘voice to the voiceless’, remind you of anyone? But unlike Phil, JTG was rewarded with a squash match against Goldberg. Is the WWE missing a trick with the extra hour and talents like: JTG, Zack Ryder, A-RI etc etc etc..? Surely this hour should be the undercard hour!

I’m not suggesting that it should be one hour of solid undercarders, that would be stupid, but throughout a 3 hour Raw, they should get their chance to shine. And I’m also not talking about pointless matchups either. Vince says it enough ‘this is entertainment, not professional wrestling’ so why have a wrestling match without the entertainment – and by entertainment, I mean feuds. Give these youngsters (some who aren’t young at all) a chance to feud with each other and the cream will rise to the top.

Professional Wrestling is completely saturated right. TNA recognised this and is decreasing the amount of PPVs in the hopes that it’s quality not quantity that matters. Personally I think they’re right – I still remember the days when the WWE would build to the four main PPVs of the year. If the WWE carries on with the saturation of the market (and the 3 hour raw is a part of this) then the DOW could be upon us in 2013…

Life of Wrestling: Short and sweet, my life of wrestling for 2012 can be summed up in 18 seconds: the catapulting of Daniel Bryan in to a new stratosphere that took just 18 seconds. 2012 was the year of the Indy wrestler; a charge led by the likes of CM Punk, Daniel Bryan and Austin Aries and I for one welcomed it. I’m looking forward to 2013; eager to get on that Road to Wrestlemania and to see exactly what TNA can do with this Aces & Eights saga.

That’s all folks… As always, post your comments, thoughts and opinions below! Or message me on twitter and let me know what you think the ‘Death of Wrestling’ is and I might just blog about it!!! Peace and I’m out…
