Death of Wrestling: Weed the People

Published On 03/03/2013 | By David Davis | Columns

Greetings to all… It’s David Davis with my weekly blog: Death of Wrestling. For all of those who read this regularly, you will know that this is not a blog about bashing wrestling; it’s a blog of a frustrated fan, who loves the business and wishes that each week it could be a little better.

It’s a hot topic this week and I want to add my two pence worth. Everyone is talking about Jack Swagger’s arrest and the internet is abuzz with his new catchphrase: Weed the People. I however am going to take a stance that may seem leftfield; it’s definitely not the status quo – but before I start I just want to make it clear I don’t condone what he’s done in anyway shape or form… BUT I DO NOT THINK HE SHOULD BE PUNISHED BY THE WWE.

When Jacob Hager decided to become a professional wrestler he didn’t ask to be a role model. I mean, he probably figured that if he made it to the big leagues he’d be watched by the masses and held accountable for his actions, but it’s not like he was setting his sights on being a children’s TV presenter…

In the UK, a well known children’s show, Blue Peter, had a presenter that was caught doing cocaine and quite rightly he lost his job. Blue Peter is a show designed for kids. It’s on the BBC and prides itself on shaping young minds… Young minds and drugs aren’t words that should be used in the same sentence…

BUT professional wrestling is different, isn’t it? Isn’t the WWE the same company that had Hot Lesbian Action, put women through tables and prided itself on matches such as First Blood and Hell in a Cell? None of these things scream kiddy friendly to me…

YES I KNOW… in recent years the WWE has gone PG, it claims to be for the kids and holds John Cena up as the herald of this, but Jack Swagger is not John Cena… if he was then I would probably be saying: lynch him, burn him, stone him… but JACK SWAGGER is not JOHN CENA.

In fact, Jack Swagger’s character right now is a heel, and heels are supposed to be villainous people who do things like take drugs and drink drive… so maybe, just maybe he was method acting… alright, alright, he clearly wasn’t method acting.

Before I sign off for another week, there are a few things I should mention. Firstly, the Wellness policy. A lot of people are saying that he should be suspended because of this wellness policy, but isn’t the punishment for marijuana a simple fine? So why the suspension? If I’ve missed something here I’m sure you’ll let me know.

Secondly, what Jack did was bad, but didn’t Booker T go to prison for robbery? And he is now the GM of Smackdown. What about the run-ins with the law that Big Show, Chris Jericho and Ric Flair had, and these names are just off the top of my head… I get the feeling that people are gunning for Jack Swagger due to the general apathy they have for him main eventing Wrestlemania, rather than truly believing he should be punished…

Finally, I think we have to be careful about forgetting these people are human, and will make mistakes. Wrestling feuds are hard enough to get working in the first place… Do we really want them being changed at the drop of a hat due to the indiscretions of the ‘actors’ who portray the characters… that could easily lead to the DoW…

I obviously wouldn’t be saying this if he raped or murdered someone… but what he did was a misdemeanor, so we should let the police handle that and the WWE should concentrate on trying to create the best product they can, and we as fans should concentrate on trying to enjoy it.

That’s all folks… As always, post your comments, thoughts and opinions below! Or message me on twitter and let me know what you think the ‘Death of Wrestling’ is and I might just blog about it!!! Peace and I’m out…

I agree 100%. He’s doing a great job right now, and shouldn’t be punished for a small indiscretion like this. Just because others were punished for similar things in the past, doesn’t mean they should have been.

Thank god, what I’ve been thinking this whole time with all the holyer than thou commentary I’ve seen about it. He’s human, will make mistakes (dui), not the weed, each to your own buddy. I personally think Swagger’s got a shit character right now, but it will be a sweet mania match with he and del rio, swagger can definitely wrestle.
