Death of Wrestling: WMD

Skull Cans

Greetings to all… It’s David Davis with my weekly blog: Death of Wrestling. For all of those who read this regularly, you will know that this is not a blog about bashing wrestling; it’s a blog of a frustrated fan, who loves the business and wishes that each week it could be a little better.

What’s up, guys? I have to apologise for my thought this week – as I’m the guy who swallowed the rule book and makes sure that everyone follows them. You might even think that I was the secondary school prefect, but I wasn’t – and not just because my school didn’t have them!

Now I know that professional wrestling is a worked sport, but I’d imagine most of you know that it does have a few rules; like a 10 second count out, and a few lesser known rules; like holding the tag rope… And there’s also another rule: No Closed Fists!

Big Show’s KO, or the WMD, is a closed fist – so why is it legal? Obviously, Show has been using it for a while, but the segment on Smackdown maybe me really think: should the WWE be focusing on a manouevre that is technically banned by the majority of wrestling promotions, including their own?

I actually liked the segment a lot. I’m pretty sure that science dictates a kick will be able to generate more force than a punch, but this is professional wrestling and I secretly hoped the Big Show would win, and very glad that he did!

Now I don’t think for one second that the Big Show using a closed fist will result in the DOW, but it does make me think that the WWE are getting a little lazy. It wasn’t that long ago wrestlers would deliberately punch to get disqualified, or William Regal would ensure the Power of the Punch would be done behind the ref’s back… Hell, the Late Great Eddie Guerrero made a career from lying, cheating and stealing! But always behind the ref’s back…

I think it’s a terrible time when a company insults the intelligence of an audience with a ‘they’ll never remember that stupid rule’ type of attitude. In fact, if they thought about it and actually tried, more drama and better stories would come from them following the rules that they themselves set out… at least, it did in the past…

Life of Wrestling: Because of the way TNA is shown in the UK, I’m always a week behind when I write this blog. Last week we found out that Bully Ray was going to team with the Stinger to take on Aces and Eights… I love this! It’s been a while since I’ve seen a storyline where Heels and Faces have to work together to defeat a common foe. I’m looking forward to this week’s Impact and BFG as well!!!

That’s all folks… As always, post your comments, thoughts and opinions below! Or message me on twitter and let me know what you think the ‘Death of Wrestling’ is and I might just blog about it!!! Peace and I’m out…
