Death of Wrestling: WWE Universe

Greetings to all… It’s David Davis with my weekly blog: Death of Wrestling. For all of those who read this regularly, you will know that this is not a blog about bashing wrestling; it’s a blog of a frustrated fan, who loves the business and wishes that each week it could be a little better.

It’s CHRISTMASSSS!!!! Well… Nearly! So who has time to read opinions by professional wrestling bloggers..? Clearly YOU! But don’t worry I’ll keep this brief… I just want to talk about the WWE Universe and something that thespians call breaking the fourth wall. I’ve been watching some NXT lately… I’ll admit wrestling’s been a bit saturated recently so I’ve been selective over my viewing pleasure, but with all the NXT call ups, I thought it best I get across the WWEs development territory.

As I’ve watched for the last month or so, something’s been bothering me: does this place exist in a different universe to the WWE? Is it in isolation to the WWE main stories, because if so that is a little confusing? In particular, Seth Rollins and Big E Langston appearing to be fan favourites in NXT, but being called up to the roster as heels.

Now in and of itself I don’t see a problem with that, but if they go backwards and forwards how can they be heels and faces? I understand that characters evolve and someone like Christian, Randy Orton or even the imminent immortal CM Punk are great examples of people who flip flop between roles… BUT even they wouldn’t be a heel on Smackdown and then a face on RAW, would they?

Most people reading this will know that wrestling is ‘kayfabe’ and for those who don’t I used that word to protect your innocence and I hope Santa brings you everything you want! But doesn’t using the same character in different guises on different shows break the fourth wall? The only possible reason I can think of for the WWE to do this is: they just don’t care about people who consume ALL of their product??? But if that’s true… yep you guessed it… it’s the DOW.

Next week my blog will be devoted to the single thing in 2012 that I think will lead to the DOW, but it’d be great if I could get your thoughts for some inspiration. Hit me up on the comments below or on my twitter.

Life of Wrestling: There’s a lot of good in a lot of professional wrestling right now and quite honestly I’ve spoken about a lot of the storylines I’m feeling right now. So instead of talking about one specific storyline, as it’s Christmas, I’m just going to list the wrestlers that I’m liking right now and you deduce the ‘why’ for yourselves. In no particular order: CM Punk, The Shield, Aces & Eights, AJ Styles, Bully Ray, Austin Aries, Paul Heyman, Tara, Mickie James, Eve, Big E Langston and Bobby Roode. It’s not an exhaustive list and if someone’s not on it, it doesn’t mean I’m not feeling their stuff, it just means they’re not on it!

That’s all folks… As always, post your comments, thoughts and opinions below! Or message me on twitter and let me know what you think the ‘Death of Wrestling’ is and I might just blog about it!!! Peace and I’m out…
