Devon Talks About His TNA Return, Company Direction, Tag Team Division & More

TNA Hall of Famer Devon recently spoke with the PWTorch Livecast about a variety of topics. Below are the highlights:

His return and status with TNA:
“It felt good to be back with Bubba, I think I missed that a lot. Although we’ve had success in singles competition, it always feels good to be back side by side and putting people through tables. We’re going to do what we have to do in terms of going into this Hall of Fame. We’re just going to play it by ear and whenever my brother needs me, I’ll be there for him.”

His thoughts on TNA’s direction:
“I’m really excited about TNA. I know there were some rumors about the organization and how it’s going down…I can tell you after being there for the tapings, it’s not. I think TNA is definitely moving in the right direction. I believe these next few shows that you’re going to see from New York City, you’re going to see a whole different TNA. So for those critics that have been badmouthing the product or saying ill things about TNA, I think these shows will change your mind and make you think ‘Hmm, these guys are going in the right direction.’ I see TNA staying in that direction and really going forward. You’ve got a bunch of hard-working guys in that company, and the great thing about it is that the organization realized: let us be us and we’ll perform the magic – and that’s exactly what they did in New York City. I can’t wait for August.”

What he noticed about TNA behind the scenes during the New York tapings:
“It was time for a change. I think the fans made it clear that they wanted a change and they wanted to see different things and different people taking care of business – and I think TNA realized that. I think they did an excellent job bringing in new minds and changing things up. I was extremely impressed when I walked through those doors on that first New York taping, because I had stopped watching the show. I haven’t caught up with everything that was going on, with the wrestling school that I own and my twin boys – Terrence and Terrell – they’re in the wrestling school. So with all of that going on, plus Hope for a Single Mom, my attention was taken away from pro wrestling in that aspect of watching it on TV. And when I got to the Manhattan Center and I started watching the show, there were a lot of new faces in the locker room and in the personnel, and I just couldn’t believe how things were being run. It’s the way it should have been from day one, the way it’s run now. It’s such a breath of fresh air that I’m like ‘Okay, I like the way things are going. I can definitely see the change, and the morale seems to be up.’ Moving forward, I think we’re really going to start taking attention now. I just pray and hope that we’re still going in that direction and that TNA will take off to the next level.”

His thoughts on the Wolves and the TNA tag team division:
“They remind me of the British Bulldogs, especially the shorter guy (Davey Richards). I mean, he’s like the Dynamite Kid – you can see it in his work. When I saw them in New York City, I was like ‘I can’t wait to work with these guys,’ because I think working with guys like that will bring it out of me and Bubba to see if we still got it or not. So I’m looking forward to getting in the ring with those guys and just having a blast. Those two can really, really go. And if there’s any more tag teams that they can put into the mix and make this work like they did in the Attitude Era, it’s only a matter of time before it explodes again. Now that Team 3D is back…it’s like Bubba always said: we’re going to put on the makeup one more time like Kiss and we’re going to do what we do best, and that’s tag team wrestling.”

Criticisms regarding the veterans in the spotlight:
“Well, I think what a lot of people have to understand, is that a lot of people blame Hogan and the guys for taking the spotlight…Listen, we have writers. There are writers that write this stuff, and at that particular point in time they saw it fit to put guys in certain positions on TV. We as the wrestlers don’t have that control, and I think that’s what a lot of people don’t understand when they make those comments. They assume we have that control, but we don’t. We’re just there to do our job and that’s the way it goes. A lot of stuff behind the scenes that the fans don’t see, they interpret in their own way. From what they gather from watching the show, they just assume that this guy did this and this guy did that, but that’s not the case. When you work for an organization, whether it’s the WWE or TNA, it’s the people in charge that call the shots.”
