Discussing Why The New Day Should Stay Together

New Day Falls? By the looks of it, that’s where things are headed right now but that would also be one of the biggest mistakes the WWE could make upon entering the RAW/SmackDown brand split era.

The Wyatt Family vs. The New Day feud is intriguing, no doubt about it. The Wyatts came back as strong as ever. The time off helped Bray and his flock shake off the negative effects of their continuous bad booking and now they look like a plausible threat again.  However, it’s the New Day who grabbed my attention from the start of this rivalry. I have never seen anyone handle the Wyatts so well (except maybe the Shield).  The New Day are confident. They gain credit solely by having the guts to make fun of the Wyatts, as if they were any other opponent. Their jokes don’t sound forced and don’t undermine the strength of the Wyatts. They just show that the New Day are not afraid to be who they are, regardless of who stands against them. Well, two of them aren’t.

It’s obvious that Xavier Woods has been acting strangely lately. If his fear wasn’t apparent enough, it definitely was pushed straight in your face by the constant zooming on Xavier’s facial expressions throughout every exchange the New Day and the Wyatts have. The first thought that comes to mind is that the WWE have seen enough of the New Day and want to have them go their separate ways. With the brand split and the live draft, coming in a couple of weeks, something has to give. Teams will be broken and the New Day seem to be the WWE’s pick for a sacrifice. Ending the New Day and possibly winning the titles would be a great accomplishment to put under the Wyatts’ belt. But I keep wondering if the New Day really need to break up. Couldn’t they simply stay together?

The New Day act works. I agree, they’ve been champions for far too long. Other teams need an opportunity to shine, while the New Day need some time off of the center stage, in order to protect their jokes from getting overused and unfunny. Also, the New Day are so popular that they can survive very well without the gold. Children adore the New Day and as more than half of the WWE fan base is under 14, the New Day’s merchandize sells. It would be illogical for the WWE to break something that makes them money. This leads me to believe that the plan is to get rid of Woods and keep Kofi and Big E as the New Day. This, however, would be a horrible mistake. Xavier Woods might wrestle rarely but he is the soul of the group. He created the concept and he scratched and clawed until he got the people responsible backstage to grant him this opportunity. The New Day cannot function without him. You can’t rip the heart out of something and expect it to perform as if nothing happened.

There are two ways to use Woods’ odd behaviour without having to write the New Day off just yet. The first option is to have Xavier fail a few times. Have him stay frozen in fear as the Wyatts attack his friends. Have him curl up in a corner and shiver with horror. Push him to the extreme. Then, as the New Day seems to be doomed to fall to the Eater of Worlds, have Xavier Woods shake off the terror and fight back. Have him defend his friends to his last breath. Make him the hero, the deciding factor that gives the New Day the edge.  This would turn the rivalry into a great tale of a man who conquers his fears. After all, as the heroes of the children, the New Day should be used to show them that it’s OK to be scared, if in the end you fight your demons because the Boogeyman only exists while you still believe in him.

The second solution I have is a bit less heroic but it’s smart. Don’t you find it odd that Xavier Woods is acting completely out of character but no one in the New Day notices anything? Kofi and Big E are either really stupid or they know exactly what’s going on with their friend. What if the whole “Woods is scared” part of the plot is fake? What if it was an act all along? Maybe the New Day are playing mind games of their own, allowing the Wyatts to believe that they’ve won and thus, not expecting resistance from Woods. In this scenario it doesn’t matter who wins the feuds in the end. What’s important is the intrigue, the plotting and the fact that no matter the outcome, the New Day hade a game plan and stayed together until the end.

There are ways to make the Wyatt Family vs. The New Day rivalry exciting without destroying the New Day in the process. Brand split or not, the New Day are good together and they have more to bring to the table. The WWE should think carefully before they destroy the best active stable on the roster.
