Fandango Says ‘PG Is More Rewarding Than Attitude Era’, Talks About Internet Fans & More

fandangob

DigitalSpy spoke with Fandango about, among other things, the comparison between PG and Attitude Era. He has some very pointed comments when comparing the two eras. He says:

“I think it’s more rewarding to know that we can go out and put on a good show without going lowbrow and taking the easy road…”Whether it’s the middle finger, or cursing, because that’s going to get a reaction no matter what…I think chair shots and middle fingers and swearing and girls with their tops off is an easy reaction. I think the way we do it now is a lot more rewarding, for sure.”

On Summer Rae getting a shot at the Divas Title:

“I think the more matches she gets and more exposure and more experience with the Divas and kind of works her way up the rankings.

On his dancing gimmick overshadowing his mic skills or in-ring ability:

“When I first started wrestling I was always concerned just about my moves and in-ring ability – my manoeuvres and just being a solid performer, a solid wrestler.

On how connected he is to the internet wrestling community:

“There are pros and cons to how connected we are now…One of the negatives, like you said, is that bad news travels really fast and secrets get out and it can really kill an angle…On the other hand, good news, it helps promote good things too. It really helps the WWE Universe stay connected and up to date with what’s going on.”

The psychology of internet reaction to the show is kind of like when you interview people coming out of a movie theater. People coming out first are people who couldn’t wait to get out of there, and are happy to express their dissatisfaction with the movie they’ve just seen. The real fans of the movie are still in there applauding or watching the credits. They won’t be in the mood to complain afterwards. They just saw a movie they liked. No need to vent. On the internet, it’s almost all venting. And maybe it’s too easy to vent. Used to be that you’d have to sit down with a pen and paper and write a letter of complaint, if you were really that steamed about something. Now you can just get on line and attack.

  • Maurice Andrews

Couldn’t agree with him more. The Attitude Era is gone and it’s never coming back. So either stop watching, or stop complaining, or just be miserable your entire life. When I don’t like a show I simply stop watching it. I don’t continue to watch and just complain every day about it online. Continuing to do something that you don’t like is miserable. The WWE are hitting record highs in every aspect of their business and they are sticking with PG programming probably forever. Like Batista said…”Deal With It.”

    • Bryan Thomas

Record highs? They’re viewership has been dropping over the past weeks

      • Maurice Andrews

The stock price is at an all-time high giving them a market cap at over $2.1 Billion. I’m sure they’re not crying themselves to sleep at that raw rating dropping a few small percentages.

        • Bryan Thomas

Stock can drop in a heartbeat.

          • Maurice Andrews

It can, but it has steadily rose since they went PG. So why in heavens name would they change it? Do they not like making money? I own a VERY small business and I have one goal. Make money! Going PG has been the smartest decision they have made as a company and unless Vince wakes up and decides that having $2.1B is not a good thing then it will never go away. So again, people can either stop watching, stop complaining or continue to be miserable. I used to be a big fan of the show Fringe. A few years ago I started disliking how the show as going and thought the writing was going downhill. Do you know what I did? I SIMPLY STOPPED WATCHING. I didn’t continue to watch, then just complain about it online every day. That would be a miserable existance. I stopped watching 2 seasons ago, that is 52 hours of my life I would never get back. WWE puts on 30 hours of programming per month, thats 460 per year. I couldn’t imagine spending my time watching that much TV and hating every minute of it. Just stop watching.

          • Bryan Thomas

Maybe they love wrestling and they hang on to the hope that it will get better one day. Just like boxing fans hang on to that hope. And the wwe stock is not rising because vince went pg. It’s rising because of the movies, make-a-wish foundation, supporting breast cancer. Doesn’t make sense for stock to go up just because they went PG

          • Maurice Andrews

Stock goes up because investors see the future value of the company rising. And the value is rising because of the direction the company is going in.

          • Bryan Thomas

And the direction they’re going has everything to do with the make a wish and the movies. Has nothing to do with the fact that they went pg. They went PG about 6 to 8 years ago and stock hasn’t been rising that long

          • Maurice Andrews

Theyve been doing Make A Wish since the early 90′s. And theyve had 1 successful movie in the last 5 years and it was starring Halle Berry and I think it was rated R. What do movies that aren’t PG have to do with their television programming?

          • Bryan Thomas

They’ve been doing it since the 90′s and since cena has become involved, it’s been more successful than ever. And the quality of the movies has nothing to do with it. It’s the fact that they ventured into the movie industry. Pretty sure they wouldn’t have been given a scooby doo project if venturing into movies was considered a fail

          • Maurice Andrews

Since the 90′s and since Cena was involved. You do realize there is a 15 year gap between the early 90′s and when Cena became the face of the company. Austin and Rock granted wishes as well. Doing make a wish had nothing to do with them going PG. Going PG was a business decision and it has been INSANELY profitable. Why market your product to a 30 year old who will come by himself, not buy a piece of merchandise and leave? Why not market your product to a 10 year old who will have to bring their parent with them (so now you just sold two tickets instead of 1) and will by a Cena shirt and arm band (extra $40). It is a smart business decision. Also, you can sell your product to more advertisers if you are PG. Make fun of it all you want, but Scooby Doo and Fruity Pebbles have deep pockets and have no problem giving it to a company that has 10 million kids watching their TV show every week. It was a smart business decision.

          • Bryan Thomas

10 year olds went crazy for the attitude era product back then. Who said the kids hate the attitude era? And cena has granted more wishes than ANYBODY! period

          • Maurice Andrews

Cena has. I agree. Good for him and good for the company.

          • Bryan Thomas

Good that the make a wish is doing better than ever now. Over time it eventually turn heads. Just didn’t turn as much heads back then as they do now.

          • Maurice Andrews

Do you know which sports teams have the worst attendance? The bad ones. People don’t pay money to see something they don’t like. Do you know which TV shows have the worst ratings and end up getting cancelled? The bad ones. People don’t watch TV shows that they don’t think are good. Wrestling fans are the only fans of any form of entertainment that enjoy being miserable. Stop watching or stop complaining. I just don’t get it. If I don’t like the food at a restaurant, I stop going there. I don’t keep going there, buy the food, say its terrible with the hope that one day they will serve better food. That would be insane. If you don’t like the product, stop watching.

          • Bryan Thomas

It’s not wrestling fans complaining about wrestling in general. If that was so then they would complain about roh and njpw. They’re complaining about the mainstream product. The same product that’s hard to escape. Trust me if there were another great wrestling promotion broadcasted in america then people would have an alternative. Wwe just happens to unfortunately be the easiest to catch on tv. So there’s a difference in complaining about wrestling and complaining about wwe. It’s easy to stop watching if there’s no great alternative that can be caught on tv as easil as wwe

          • Maurice Andrews

Do you think the WWE cares that fans come to shows and chant for CM PUNK? NO! You bought at ticket, that all they care about! I own a small business, if someone bought my product just to throw it away and then complain about it to people who do the same thing and did that every single week for years would I care? No! I’d sit back and watch them checks roll in.

          • Bryan Thomas

Ok you own a business, heard you the first time. It’s not about cm punk chants in the end. It’s about broadening your fan base. And wwe wants that, or else Alberto Del Rio wouldn’t have been a main eventer. Or they wouldn’t be doing this andre the giant trophy thing at WM. And they may not listen to cm punk chants. Cm punk left on his own will and would be back on wwe tv if he wanted to be. Which is the attempt that vince made. HOWEVER they have no choice but to deal with yes chants. Therefore the WM main event has been altered.

          • Maurice Andrews

Daniel Bryan is a multiple time WWE Champion, he’s main evented several PPV’s, they prominently feature his merchandise on their website and ever merchandise stand I have been to at live events, he is given both mic time and ring time every Raw and Smackdown. Since when has the WWE not featured Daniel Bryan? He’s been one of the top guys for several years now.

          • Bryan Thomas

They had no plans of putting him in the main event at WM until recently. And multiple time champ or not, if it wasn’t for the yes chants then the main event at WM would still be orton vs batista

          • Maurice Andrews

And you know this how? The WWE has never in the history of the company had a Heel vs Heel in the Mania main event. This is a multi billion dollar company that has produced hundreds of thousands of hours of television. Perhaps they left him out to build the drama. Remember, punk left because he didn’t want to face HHH at mania. So if Punk was supposed to face HHH, and Bryan had just finished his feud with the Wyatt’s, who do you think he was going to face at mania? Spoiler alert, BRYAN WAS ALWAYS MEANT TO FIGHT FOR THE TITLE AT MANIA! They have been building toward that for months!

          • Bryan Thomas

You must not remember that batista came back as a babyface. A babyface. It wasn’t until they realized that the fans wasn’t liking this, that they decided to turn him heel. They had every intention of it being orton vs batista at WM but two heels can’t work at WM therefore they need a face…..NOW they want bryan in the main event. If they had every intention on bryan being in the main event then it would’ve been storied better. Had the fans cheered for batista, he would still be a babyface and it would still be orton vs batista

  • Bryan Thomas

Who cares about middle fingers etc? I just ask for a more realistic product. Where everyone has more creative freedom and all of the titles mean something and we’re not getting force fed. We don’t need TV-MA. Just give us TV-14. Hell when i was a kid, even Dragonball Z was TV-14 lol.

    • Maurice Andrews

Please name the TV show where actors get creative freedom. Actors are handed scripts to follow by writers. And they can either read the lines on the script or they will be replaced. That is how television has worked for the last 80 years, why would it change now?

      • Bryan Thomas

I didn’t say complete freedom, i said more freedom. Do you think someone was telling rock what to say back in the day? And i believe in some shows, some actors can add their twist some of their scripts

        • Maurice Andrews

Yes, and in WWE wrestlers call their own spots during matches. The finish is pre-determined, but most guys get together before a match and figure out which spots and moves they want to do. Happens before every match. They have plenty of freedom. And again, if they are unhappy with their current situation, they are always free to leave. The WWE machine will continue to make Billions without them.

          • Bryan Thomas

Oh yea it’s easy for you to say that they can leave if they want. The fact is, today if their were more wrestling promotions that pay somewhat similar to what wwe pays, then i’m pretty sure that there would be many walkouts and freedom in the ring isn’t freedom to develope your character on the mic. Not sure if you know this but the outcome in all of professional sports is controlled. Wrestling is just the only ones to admit it

        • Maurice Andrews

And to answer your question, yes, the Rock got a script before every interview. He can make small changes if he wishes, or he can stick to what the script says. Same as now, guys get a word for word script, they can make small changes, or stick to it word for word. Just like with any TV show, you can make small changes.

          • Bryan Thomas

That doesn’t apply for every wrestler. Only the hand picked favorite can do that. Otherwise guys like dolph would’ve showcased his mic skills long ago instead of recently

  • Bryan Thomas

Only reason they went PG is so that Linda McMahon can run for whatever she was running for.

  • cj

One thing about the Attitude Era, even as a mid carder or even lower mid carder, you still had storylines, fueds, ppv matches etc. They had the European championship, light heavyweight championship, hardcore championship, king of the ring tournaments, and wayyyyyyyy more match types and varieties, as a midcarder slowly falling to the lower midcard, I’d think Fandango would want that around now. Me personally I don’t care about the use of curse words and all that, but even though we all know wrestling is scripted, the attitude era gave more of realistic feeling to it. And as far as the crowd reactions, the arena would erupt back then just by the sound of a superstars music. Nowadays you have the only way to get a decent crowd pop is by either using weapons or it’s a returning superstar or be Daniel Bryan lol.

  • cj

But WWE is more marketable as PG. they have more sponsers, more investors and their stocks have hit a record high. They’re not concerned with the ratings anymore, it’s about the money. So I understand that aspect of it.

  • Jason

Atleast during the attitude era titles like the United States and Intercontinental and Women’s had credibility… not to mention tag team titles aswell.. Now you barely see these defended.. you have several divas who just want that spotlight or that “brass ring” if you will to have the focus on them for some “reality TV show” that no one cares about. a Championship is about being skilled, work hard, and to be in that ring every night doing what you love. Not to gain ratings for a reality show that degrades the legacy of what a championship truly represents.
