Hell in a Cell: Why Brian Kendrick Should Become Cruiserweight Champion

The RAW Cruiserweight Division is not doing well right now but the WWE might just have the man to save the day – THE Brian Kendrick. Maybe it’s time the Post-Apocalyptic Scavenger cheats and lies his way into dethroning the Cruiserweight Champion TJ Perkins at Hell in a Cell, this Sunday.

The cruiserweights are great but their booking, much like the general booking of RAW, is completely dissatisfactory. 10-minute matches in the third half of the show; no promo time and no character development – no wonder the fans don’t care! However, all of this has to stop and there’s no better man to draw attention to the Cruiserweight Division than the Brian Kendrick. He is the only person in the division, who the WWE fans are familiar with. The WWE Universe cares about Kendrick and this fact has to be utilized, in order to save this brilliant project from its terrible booking.

Kendrick is the one strong character amongst the cruiserweights. His desperate, “willing to do anything” attitude is both dangerous and compelling. His portrayal of the character is outstanding – you can see signs of this feral, survivalist mentality in his every facial expression and mannerism. The fallen, desperate man Kendrick plays was what gave TJ Perkins the little spotlight he had. The backstory of Kendrick, having mentored TJ to success, made their interactions emotional and intriguing. TJ could not look more like a babyface, put in this impossible situation of fighting the rotten version of a person, who he cares for. Why the RAW Creative Team hasn’t put those interactions in the middle of the ring but kept them as short backstage segments is simply baffling.

The loss to Rich Swann on Monday was meant to drive Kendrick off the edge. Going in Hell in a Cell, coming off of a loss to a guy who’s not even in the title picture was bound  to be a hit too much for a man in Brian’s unstable mental state. He begged TJP to let him win on Sunday. Yes, Kendrick could have been booked to cheat against Swann and show that his methods work. Yet, this angle exposes us to a different side of his persona – the twisted manipulator. Kendick is more than a cheater. He’s willing to use anything, including pulling TJP’s hear strings, in order to win. Perkins won’t lie down and give Kendrick the belt but he will hesitate to finish him off and in that slight moment of weakness; in TJ’s show of kindness, Kendrick will attack and will win the championship.

Betrayal is far more villainous than cheating. This will make Kendrick stand out as a hell even more. Furthermore, it will make the fans feel for TJP. People would relate to his naïve, emotionally charged doubts that led to his downfall. Perkins is going to become the perfect babyface through suffering treason by the person he respects the most. This storyline has to be capitalized on. The cruiserweights must be allowed to open RAW for once, or at least, they need to have a proper promo segment in the ring. Attention must be drawn to the new champion and his despicable ways.

Another twist that can make Kendrick’s reign great is the debut of Noam Dar. Whether he comes in as a face to oppose Brian Kendrick, or as a third heel party to make TJP’s life unbearable, Dar has enough fans to make a difference. The WWE needs him to become involved in a rivalry with Kendrick, even if only as a tweener. Two huge characters will make for a great feud. The fans will begin to care and if played right, this situation, led by Brian Kendrick can make the RAW Cruiserweight Division the spectacle it should have been all along.
