Hulk Hogan – The Biggest Fake In Wrestling?

As you’ll know, the Hulkster has recently been awarded $115 million, after winning a lawsuit against website Gawker.

Apparently the release of the tape was not newsworthy according to Hogan and his lawyers, but surely the most famous wrestler in the world having sex with his friend’s (Bubba the Love Sponge) wife, Heather Clem, is?

Apparently some celebrities still can’t seem to get it in to their heads that it’s a two way street. They need the media to make them famous, and promote all the ‘great’ things they do. Of course, this means that if they do anything indecent, the media will publish that too. It’s a trade off, and if you don’t want any negative stuff published about you, then quite simply – don’t do it.

This is one of the few advantages the average Joe has. Nobody cares what he does or what he has to say, but they also don’t care when he gets drunk and gets in to fights or who he sleeps with, because they don’t know who he is.

Hogan’s lawsuit hurts, because it reminds us just how unfair the world is. What he did was wrong, and Gawker showed the world. Of course they did it to get more views and probably could have gone about it better, but the fact of that matter is, he did what he did, and he doesn’t like that people know about it.

It’s not the first time Hogan has done something out of character. There is a clip of him using racial slurs while criticizing his daughter for going out with a black guy too. He also lied about the out of court settlement he had with Richard Belzer, who he choked out on television. He’s had affairs and admitted to taking steroids.

These are just some of the things that you’d think would make fans sick when hearing his music hit and seeing him walk out on to the stage, but not so. It seems wrestling fans will accept anything and cheer their ‘hero’ no matter what. It wouldn’t be surprising to see fans cheering for Chris Benoit if he suddenly walked down the ramp during an episode of Raw. Fans are fickle, but they are also forgetful. Either that or they just don’t care.

Of course we all know that wrestling character are not real, but this goes very far. Terry Bollea is literally the complete parallel opposite of his wrestling character. Hulk Hogan is a vitamin taking, prayer saying all American hero, fighting for the right of every man. The man who plays him is, as mentioned before, a steroid taking, affair having, money worshiping liar.

Hogan loves money, more than your average guy. He love it above all else, and any wrestling fan who sees him as this red and yellow hero needs to remember that. The only reason Hogan loves the fans is because they are responsible for his high wages. When fans were shouting Hogan-Austin during a Hall of Fame ceremony over 10 years ago, he creased his hand, suggesting that it would take a big pay-day for that to happen. This unsurprisingly caused fans to boo. On Jimmy Kimmel a few years earlier, when Jimmy’s show was only just starting out, he talked of how great it was that there were so many Hulkamaniacs, to which Jimmy responded ‘Well yeah, great for you….perhaps not so great for them.’

Yes wrestling is a business and yes most wrestlers aren’t a carbon copy of their on screen characters in real life, but are they that different? Are John Cena or The Rock the complete polar opposite to their wrestling character in real life? Is former wrestler Daniel Bryan an asshole in real life? Was the Stone Cold character we saw in the ring every week, nothing like the Texan in reality? No. They weren’t exactly the same, but for a lot of these guy, their character was an extension of themselves. Hulk Hogan is by far the biggest phony and fake in a profession seen by many as quite fake anyway. It’s disturbing how a man who does so much wrong, with a bit of clever marketing and heavy false advertising, can have people all over the world eating out of the palm of his hand.

Gawker’s lawyer rightfully side that Terry Bollea has consistently chosen to put his private life out there for public consumption. Of course, Hogan only wants people to see what he wants to show, not the dirty skeletons he has in his closet. He says the release of the tape caused him emotional pain and ruined his public image – and so it should. He made his bed and now has to sleep in it.

Hogan has made a fortune convincing people around the world that he fights for them. The fact that he has won such a high payout for something that, get this, he ACTUALLY DID, being made public, is a scandal. Unfortunately it just shows what high priced lawyers can do.
