Former WWE Superstar and 3 time WWE World Tag-Team Champion, Rob Conway, who worked for WWE for 7 years, recently took some time out of
his scheduled to speak with www.PWMania.com.
He spoke on several topics from how he started his career, his time in WWE,
working with The Rock & Mick Foley, returning to WWE, his release, TNA and much more. Below is the complete interview:
Andy
Steven: Hello Rob, firstly I would like to thank you for taking
this time out of your scheduled to take part in an interview for
www.PWMania.com. How did you break into the wrestling business and how
did you get into WWE?
Rob Conway: I drove past a sign on my way to work
everyday in 1997. The sign said 'Danny Davis School Of Wrestling' (OVW)
and I really liked watching wrestling and thought I would check it out.
They had a Sunday show which I watched a couple of times and then signed
for the school. OVW later became the WWE Developmental system in 1999
and I got hired in 2000.
Andy Steven: During your 7 years with the WWE you
accomplished a lot, winning the WWE Tag-Team Championship 3 times and
worked with several stars such as Dudley Boyz (Team 3-D), Chris Benoit,
Edge, Shelton Benjamin and many others. What are your memories of
working with these stars and winning the WWE Tag-Team Championships?
Rob Conway: Winning the WWE Tag-Team Championship in
Montreal from Chris Benoit and Edge was the highlight of my tag-team
career in WWE. They were great to work with and the fans were amazing,
it was awesome. Working with William Regal and Nick Dinsmore was great
and working with The Rock and Mick Foley was fun. Being the only
tag-team to wrestle The Rockers in years was a blast. I had a lot of big
time matches with top talent which was great.
Andy
Steven: In 2005, WWE gave you "The Con-Man" Rob Conway gimmick,
who came up with that gimmick, what was your opinion on the gimmick and
do you think WWE used you to your best potential at that stage?
Rob Conway: I came with the concept of a cocky heel
that was really into himself, other heels would not even like the
character. That was my Ironman character from OVW and it could have gone
as far as they wanted it to. I am able to work with anyone and have long
matches at house shows, my vision was to first become the
Intercontinental Champion and bring up under card babyfaces to the
Intercontinental level. I never really got enough high profile matches
on RAW with the character to get it over. Lots of people at shows would
cheer for me so I could have easily turned babyface anytime.
Andy Steven: You were involved in many WWE
Intercontinental Championship matches against Jeff Hardy, Ric Flair and
Shelton Benjamin. Did WWE ever have any plans for you to win the WWE
Intercontinental Championship? What were their original plans for you?
Rob Conway: I do not think things are planned in
advance as people think most of the time. It normally is planned week to
week.
Andy
Steven: In January last year, you came out on RAW and said that
you would not lose another match and if you did he would quit RAW, Jeff
Hardy then defeated you quickly and Vince McMahon came out and said his
famous words "you're fired". Where was this storyline going?
Rob Conway: Me and Sylvan where supposed to reform La
Resistance on SmackDown and have Maryses as our manager.
Andy Steven: Last year in May, it was announced on
WWE's website that you had been released from the company. What was the
reason for you release from the company and would you return to WWE?
Rob Conway: They said that creative did not have
anything for me. I was with them for 7 years and was featured on RAW
from 2003 to 2007. I have never been on SmackDown or ECW, so I think
that we could work together again. WWE is a good place to work and make
really good money.
Andy Steven: What was the atmosphere like backstage in
WWE and did it change at all during your 7 year run with the company?
Rob Conway: The atmosphere changes the longer you are
there because you become more of a veteran and become more comfortable.
Andy Steven: TNA has been growing very fast in the last
few years, what is your opinion on the company, do you think they are
competition for WWE and would you consider signing for TNA?
Rob
Conway: I like to watch all wrestling and think TNA is a fun
show to watch. I hope they continue to grow and create jobs for more
wrestlers. It would be nice to see another Monday night war on TV. I
think it would be good for the business. I am currently working for the
NWA and we have nation wide TV on Colours and I should be getting a shot
at the NWA World Championship this year. I would consider going to any
good wrestling company that has contracts with guaranteed money with a
good storyline. OVW is another growing company that is fun to watch and
has had over 450 episodes on TV and counting.
Andy Steven: Have you come across any trouble
backstage?
Rob Conway: I have seen guys have trouble with each
other, however I have not had any trouble backstage.
Andy Steven: I would like to thank you very much once
again for taking this time to take part in this interview for
www.PWMania.com, I wish you the best of luck in the future and do you
have any messages to say to your fans?
Rob Conway: Thanks for all the support! You can watch
me on NWA Colours TV at 9pm on Wednesday night's or on
OVWrestling.com.
