Lawler/Kaufman Incident Makes Greatest TV Moment List

The legendary confrontation between Jerry Lawler and Andy Kaufman on Late Night with David Letterman has made The Hollywood Reporter’s “80 Greatest Moments in TV History”.

In a blurring of the lines between reality and fiction, the 1982 incident that saw Lawler infamously slap Kaufman in front of a live audience was featured in a list to celebrate the publication’s 80th Anniversary.

Although the list wasn’t ranked, Lawler appears alongside notable tragedies like the 9/11 attacks and the Kennedy Assassination, as well as fonder TV viewings like The Sopranos finale and Who Shot J.R.?

The segment was proclaimed “Performance art at its finest.”
