Fan Experience: WWE WrestleMania XXX New Orleans, 2014

My friend and I went to our first Wrestlemania and Traveled from London to New Orleans to be there. I have been a huge fan of pro wrestling for the last 17 years and to say I was pumped was an understatement! The atmosphere in New Orleans was incredible from the get go, with spontaneous YES! Chants engulfing the airport, restaurants, bars and best of all the entire stretch of Bourbon Street. Everyone we met was there for Mania, and surprisingly, most the people we met had traveled from the UK.

We stayed at The Saint Hotel on Canal Street, which we quickly found out was the nearest hotel to the Roosevelt, which happened to be the WWE hotel for the weekend. This allowed us to see and meet endless amount of superstars past and present, something that became so surreal that by a couple of days you would be unfazed by former world champions walking past you.

We returned to our hotel on evening, and were surprised to see non other than ‘The Nature Boy’ Ric Flair sat in the lobby of our hotel! I couldn’t believe it, as I am such a Flair fan and had VIP meet and greet tickets to meet the legend at the Saturday Night Axxess.

There was approx 8 fans in the bar area who were standing in awe, but not really approaching Ric. I thought it would be amazing to just go over and say hi to him and let him know I was a huge fan, however, as I walked over, Flair stood up and went mental and began screaming at my friend and I. Flair was intoxicated and was way over the top as well as hostile and aggressive, shouting and waving his hands telling everyone to go away… I understand if he had been harassed by fans but he was not, and he was not in a VIP area or the expensive 5* hotel across the road he was booked in – but the main lobby of our hotel where wrestling fans were staying. He ripped into more fans and one of his party told him to cool down. Flair shortly stormed out of the hotel back to the Roosevelt across the road. Everyone was in total shock. Flair was rude and intimidating.

We headed to Axxess on the Saturday, ignoring the events of the previous night, still excited to meet a legend and passing of his actions the previous night as drunken behavior mixed with a bad day. We arrived at the section to meet flair, we paid $100 each to get an autograph, Flair turned up 25mins late, which can be forgiven, and took regular breaks from the 300 meet and greets he had. My friend and I decided it was probably not worth standing and waiting to meet a guy who was rude to us 24 hours prior, and who clearly was not engaging with fans now and miss the rest of the Axxess experience. To give you an idea of the signing atmosphere every other wrestler was responsive to fans while Ric just signed and moved the next guy along, Hell, Undertaker was still signing autographs from the previous section 20 mins into this slot and still engaging with his fans.

To say my outlook on Ric Flair was starting to get pretty negative, which was not helped by him being in our hotel bar again on Wrestlemania Sunday, telling fans who were drinking there before he arrived to stop hanging around because he’s not signing or taking photo’s! RIC YOU’RE IN OUR HOTEL! The guy was literally off the rails, believing in his own hype, talking loudly of how he earned more than this guy this year and did this another year… The final blow came when he snapped at a young kid in a Flair T-shirt who tried getting a picture with his dad in tow. Not Cool. I know these guys cannot be on show 24/7, but this was Wrestlemania weekend, and Ric Flair was entering a public place in a city taken over by Wrestling Fans, he must have known he was going to get approached? And literally, there was never more than 8 fans there. We met Big E in the street a few days prior, and he was mobbed by a crowd of fans, he took the time to say Hi and get a photo with everyone there, no one went away unhappy, and when everyone was done, Big E just casually walked away. Awesome guy. And bar Flair, every single wrestler we saw demonstrated this level of professionalism and fan interaction.

On another note we also sat in the VIP risers at Wrestlemania in front of Brock Lesnar’s Sister and a couple of other friends, we asked her about what was known prior to the match and she said that Brock did not know about the Streak ending until that morning, take it for what it may be worth.

Bar this WrestleMania was insane every interaction, every event, every crowd chant made this a lifetime experience, and anyone who is a wrestling fan needs to go to WrestleMania!

Ric Flair sucks. Sure, he was an excellent performer, but in real life he’s a piece of trash.

Who can we sack now for Flair’ behaviour?

  • Mark M

What Liam Gallacher could do is send his thoughts to WWE?

  • Just A Guy

I remember meeting Ric Flair a few years ago at an Auto Show and while he was late (excusable seeing as a lot of WWE Superstars/Legends are to that event at least) He shook my hand, did his trademark ‘Woo!’ for the crowd and honestly I walked away happy. Sorry other people didn’t have as pleasant a Flair story as mine.

And this is why I no longer bother with a pen and paper autographs anymore.I just click my camera phone and walk away unless there is an issue?

Ric Flair is a total dick. I’ve run into him twice and he’s been a world class A-Hole both times. The most recent time was in Oklahoma City when he was actually doing house show appearances for TNA. James Storm was waiting for him and there was probably a group of 6-8 of us getting autographs. Storm signed everything for everyone and took pictures, class act guy. He even told us he was waiting for Flair in case we wanted to get stuff ready. Flair comes to baggage claim, Storm GRABS HIS BAGS so he can sign without having to worry about his stuff and Flair just goes, “Get the fuck away from me” and walks off with Storm still carrying his bags. All Storm can say is, “sorry guys”.
