The Curious Case Of WWE Champion Brock Lesnar

Another year, another Brock problem. It’s Wrestlemania season and we are in the midst of Brock-gate. With less than a month till Wrestlemania, Vince McMahon finds himself in a familiar situation–instability.

Over the past week PWM has been posting updates on the Vince and Brock backstage. While there have been updates to this developing situation, there still appears to be friction ongoing. To further enrage WWE, Lesnar was spotted at UFC 184 hanging out with UFC president Dana White this past weekend.

All this drama adds up to yet another situation where Brock Lesnar appears to be too hard to manage. WWE had to see this coming. When you negotiate a 5 million dollar a year contract, as an employer you’d think you have some control of the talent? Brock Lesnar is a ticking time bomb ready to go off at any moment, yet he’s a predictable time bomb.

Lesnar’s track record for consistence is shaky, that’s putting it mildly. He walked away from the WWE at the top of his game to pursue an NFL career. That fizzled before it started. Next up was his plunge into UFC. He succeeded in that venture and became a huge star, only to be derailed by a serious medical condition. He came back to UFC, but his comeback was short lived. Soon after he’s making his debut on RAW the night after Wrestlemania. Two years later he’s ready to jump ship back to UFC. The point is, Brock Lesnar can’t stay in one place. He’s the Jim Harbaugh of Wrestling/MMA. Don’t fault Lesnar for being on the verge of walking out once again, it’s his personality. The way this guy is wired is just different than most corporate types would prefer him to be.

Was Brock and Dana White discussing a contract at UFC 148?
Was Brock and Dana White discussing a contract at UFC 184?

This is the end of the run for Lesnar in WWE, all signs point to him leaving for the UFC the minute his contract with WWE expires. Lesnar will be gone come April, he will be employed by the same company that former WWE franchise star CM Punk currently is..UFC. History has a funny way of repeating itself. There are notable parallels that can be made to CM Punks departure from the company last Wrestlemania season. Seems like a good time of the year to get into an altercation of Vince and leave him hanging at the altar. Punk didn’t get his way, so he left the company. Plans changed quickly and Daniel Bryan got the rub by taking Punk’s place as the brief number two guy in the WWE. This time around WWE can’t be foolish enough to have had Lesnar go over on Roman Reigns at Mania. They have their handpicked guy they have been grooming for an entire year, it’s time to press enter on Roman.

The main problem in this entire fiasco is the fact that WWE still insists on paying big bucks to guys who aren’t committed to the brand. Instead of investing in the future, they still go for the big name that’s not a sure thing anymore. Granted HHH has done a great job with building NXT, though none of those NXT guys are ready to lead the company anytime soon. Bringing Brock full-time was a great idea in theory, it hasn’t been worth the $10 million they gave up. Sporadic appearances with month long droughts without seeing Lesnar on WWE programming is not giving the opportunity for fans to invest in him.

At Wrestlemania 31, you will see the last of Brock Lesnar. He will honor the contract and put over Roman as it was planned all along. This fallout between Brock and Vince should finally shed some perspective for Vince. Making big money deals with uninterested talent isn’t the way to go. Better find out now and cut your losses, before entering another contract discussion and investing another year in a guy who doesn’t want to be there. Sometimes paring of the ways is the best thing that can happen. Losing Lesnar will open up a spot at the top that Reigns will seemingly get. The time is now to give the fans what they want. Majority of the fans don’t care if Brock is with the company or not, what they do care about is seeing fan favorites like Daniel Bryan, Dolph Ziggler, and Dean Ambrose get the push to the top.

Reality is that WWE won’t give the fans what they want. What Vince wants is big, imposing, and statuesque wrestlers with mainstream recognition (Lesnar, Rock) to lead the way. The dispute in theory is much ado about nothing, the split is imminent, a year in the making. To the surprise of none, it’s just another case of Brock being Brock.
