The Problem of Roman Reigns and How to Solve it

I have tried to defend Roman Reigns on numerous occasions. After all, it’s not the guy’s fault that the WWE’s booking him badly when he could potentially be and actually has been quite the successful heel. However, the entire Superman Roman thing is getting out of control. It’s repetitive and straight-up stupid. The WWE destroyed any chances Roman could have had of becoming a popular face. The question is whether that’s on purpose, or not, and how it could be fixed.

Ever since he entered his third WWE World Heavyweight Championship reign, Reigns has been getting increasingly annoying. It’s not just the usual stiff, monotonous promos and forced acting. There’s also the completely single-minded way of thinking, demonstrated by the character. For example, it’s clear that AJ Styles is trying to play clean. He’s putting his relationship with Gallows and Anderson in jeopardy, only to protect Roman Reigns. Yet, Reigns doesn’t seem to notice. He acts upon seeing the Usos get hurt but he completely ignores anything that happens before that. Reigns’ actions defy logic. It’s frustrating how obviously terrible the script is. Maybe somewhere in a theoretical meeting, where proposals are thrown in, a half-assed idea of this sort could possibly pass but making it to the actual show, that’s beyond sloppy. Any normal human being of average intelligence would ask questions if they were in Roman’s position but he doesn’t. You can’t write completely unbelievable storylines for a character and expect the fans to relate to that.

On top of that, Roman’s never-ending unpinned streak is beyond irritating now. It’s bad. It’s getting to Cena’s level of superman-ness, just that Reigns doesn’t have half the fan following Cena has. The last time I remember Reigns getting pinned was when Sheamus cashed his MITB briefcase. Maybe there’s something I’m missing and if so, let me know, but nothing comes to mind. And if you look back, when was the last time Reigns got pinned without any interference? It just doesn’t make sense. You can’t have the entire Bullet Club gang up on a guy and yet, allow him to kick out of everything. Roman Reigns should have lost plenty of times by now.  It’s annoying to watch a match with no stakes to it. Even on a weekly show, Reigns doesn’t get pinned. News flash, WWE:  it doesn’t make Roman look stronger, it only makes him a terrible character that no one wants to see.

With all the heat Reigns gets he could easily turn heel and that would solve all his issues. It even seemed like that was about to happen a month ago. The whole “I’m not a good guy, I’m not a bad guy, I’m THE GUY” thing was so infuriating, it just had to be intentional. Being condescending about a man of AJ Styles’ class and not acknowledging AJ’s attempts to play nice, it all seemed to point towards Reigns, dropping the face act at Payback. Instead, we got this joke of a match that had three different endings. Don’t get me wrong, the wrestling was phenomenal for obvious reasons. However, the booking was bad. In all of this, Reigns was always screwed and he always persevered until he finally retained. If only he had taken advantage of AJ’s soft spot, in order to retain, things would have been different. Then, Reigns would have been able to laugh at Styles’ face for having tried to be a good guy. Anderson and Gallows would have turned on AJ for acting against them and in the end, AJ Styles would have come out, being in a great face position, while Reigns would have looked like the most horrible villain in the room. The crowd loves to hate the guy anyway, it would have fit right in.

Although that sounded like a great idea, it didn’t happen. The way the WWE’s hell-bent on  keeping Reigns in this robotic and utterly useless failed face gimmick, it’s more likely the Creative will turn AJ heel before him. The only hope the WWE Universe has of seeing Reigns join the dark side and then get taken down is Seth Rollins. The best thing the WWE could do is to bring Rollins back for Summer Slam and allow him to defeat Reigns clean. That would make Seth the top face of the business. The fans would adore him for having saved them from the tiresome reign of Roman Reigns. And if Reigns goes down the route of a heartless heel, he’ll also make it to the top. Only not as the knight in shining armour the WWE wanted him to be. All is not lost and won’t take a lot to fix. The WWE just needs to drop this tired, unbeatable gimmick of Roman Reign. It really is that simple.
