In Memoriam

The wrestling world has lost two personalities on this date:

Firstly, in 1994, one-time AWA Tag Team Champion Boris Malenko died aged 61. Malenko made his professional debut in 1957 and just 4 years later, made his first attempt at the NWA World Title, coming up short against Buddy Rogers. Through the 60′s and early 70′s, Malenko established himself as one of the top stars in the Florida territory, eventually winning 13 titles in the area. He also competed in Texas during this time, winning 3 championships there. By the late 70′s, he was winding down his career, though still found occasional success in the southern states. He went on to open a training facility, becoming one of the most prolific trainers of his age. Aside his own sons, Dean & Joe, Malenko also had a hand in the training of Sean Waltman, Perry Saturn, Buddy Landel, Gangrel, Bill Eadie and more. He passed after a short battle with cancer

On this day in 2010, the wrestling world lost former WWF personality Luna Vachon aged just 48. As a child, Vachon only had eyes for a wrestling career, despite her family encouraging her away from the business. She began training under The Fabulous Moolah at around age 16 and made her debut in Moolah’s all-female promotion in the mid-80′s. In 1985, she gained her first major exposure, appearing in Florida Championship Wrestling as a reporter. During the segment, she was ‘knocked unconscious’ by Kevin Sullivan, leading to a mental breakdown angle. In the following years, she competed in Japan, Canada and Puerto Rico while making appearances for the POWW promotion. In 1993, she was signed by the WWF (despite the company having to hire a private investigator to actually find her!) but only lasted a year before the lack of direction for the WWF’s women’s division saw her leave the promotion. She had stints in ECW, WCW and several independent promotions before returning to the WWF in 1997. She primarily served as a manager, but did step into the ring on occasion, usually alongside her clients. She left the promotion again in 2000, once again dissatisfied with the direction of the women’s division and would compete on the indies until her in-ring retirement in 2007. She was honoured at the 2009 Cauliflower Alley Club reunion and also served as an unofficial mentor to several Canadian wrestlers, most notably Nattie ‘Natalya’ Neidhart. She was found dead at her Florida home after an apparent accidental overdose. She was buried on a ranch formerly owned by her godfather, André The Giant
