Today In Wrestling History- March 17th


2000 – Beyond The Mat, a documentary on professional wrestling directed by Hollywood screenwriter Barry W. Blaustein, opens in theaters. The film focuses on Jake Roberts, Terry Funk, & Mick Foley, & also includes sections on Vince McMahon, Droz, New Jack, Koko B. Ware, & ECW’s 1st Pay-per-view, Barely Legal. The film would open at number 19 for the week & make $2,053,648 over its nine week theatrical run

2002 – El Canek wins the AAA Rey de Reyes Tournament, defeating Pirata Morgan, Cibernetico & Octagon

2009 – WWE announced the Von Erich family would be inducted into the Hall of Fame class of 2008, over Wrestlemania 25 weekend in Houston, Texas

2012 – On his Twitter, Matt “Albert” Bloom denied reports he had signed with WWE, writing, “Haha! False. Wife just had a baby. I’ll be on next tour.”  Bloom, currently working for New Japan, also commented that he had no idea where the story came from.

Within weeks, vignettes began airing to promote the debut of his new WWE persona, Tensai.  He has been with WWE since

2014-  WWE announced on Monday Night Raw that Mr. T would be inducted into the 2014 class of the WWE Hall of Fame


In 2000, CMLL Juicio Final: Homenaje a Dos Leyendas was held in Mexico City. This year saw another tweak to the event’s name, but retained the same tribute format as before:
