Why Cesaro and Sheamus Should Become Tag Team Champions

Although the Cesaro vs. Sheamus Best of Seven Series was at the bottom of the list when it came to storylines, the feud delivered some of the best wrestling matches on RAW. Due to the bad build-up, the rivalry entered Clash of Champions almost void of any hype. That is why Sheamus and Cesaro delivered one of the biggest surprises at the PPV by pulling off arguably the best match on the card. After that fight, on Sunday night, both men proved that they deserved to find themselves much higher in the hierarchy than they actually were. Little did we know that both of them were about to get a chance in the oddest possible way – in a tag team title opportunity.

Up until Clash of Champions the question was whether Cesaro was going to be the ultimate underdog, winning 4:3 from 0:3, or whether Sheamus was going to become the ultimate troll, defeating the Swiss Superman after his incredible come-back. Nobody saw this peculiar tag team, forming, until the PPV was over. Both men looked equally strong and no one would take the fall, so the only way both could get some benefits from this situation was to go down the tag team route that Mick Foley suggested on RAW.

At first glance, the pairing between the Swiss Superman and the Celtic Warrior, especially after their brutal rivalry, seems to be destined to fail. They might try to one up each other, leading to better performance from both superstars, but in the end of the day, neither one of them is willing to sacrifice himself for his partner. This lack of trust and care is deadly for any tag team. However, it’s not impossible to gradually build a connection between the two, until they actually start to like each other. It worked pretty well with Team Hell No and the fans liked it, so there is no reason why the same effect couldn’t be accomplished with Cesaro and Sheamus. It would definitely be an odd duo, but it would be new and interesting. Fortunately, new and interesting is exactly what the RAW Tag Team Division needs.

The New Day have been champions for over 400 days now. As entertaining as their act may be, everything has its limits. The New Day started gradually losing the fans’ support some time ago. Their jokes are loud and obnoxious, they play the numbers game and cheat all the time, and somehow they still are face. This has always been the New Day’s gimmick and people loved it all the same. However, the fans are getting bored from seeing the same old every week for over a year. And worst of all, as OP as they are, the champs have slowly turned into a burial machine for the rest of the division. If the New Day don’t drop the belts soon, they may completely lose the fans and that could be irreversible.

It would have been good if an actual team could get a push and defeat the New Day. However, the RAW roster is running out of options. Unfortunately, RAW, unlike SmackDown, still has a huge gap between top talent and the rest. Therefore, it looks highly unbelievable that Breezango or the Golden Truth could ever take the gold. The Shining Stars just recently started building a gimmick and it’s good but they are still far away from getting the credibility RAW would expect them to have before putting the titles on them. The Club got decimated by the WWE Creative and their terrible booking. After that many important losses, Gallows and Anderson are as believable as Bray Waytt in his quest to someday win a feud. As for Enzo and Cass, they are also suffering from the bad booking. They came in hot from NXT but they got sidelined and their act is losing its power. In the current situation, Cesaro and Sheamus could be a breath of fresh air.

The Celtic Warrior and Cesaro both would benefit from the exposure of having the titles around their waists. The fans would be drawn to the storyline because it’s bizarre. The New Day would simply underestimate them for obvious reasons. On top of that, the Club could get involved to screw the New Day out of the titles. It’s easy to book their defeat without hurting their credibility. Then the rest of the teams will have someone new to feud with in the face of the new champs – Cesaro and Sheamus. More teams will get a share of the spotlight and the level in the division could eventually even up. Making Cesaro and Sheamus champions is a win/win situation for both them and the RAW Tag Team Division.
