WWE Live Event Results From Cedar Rapids (3/4): Four Title Matches, Dean Ambrose Headlines, More

Thanks to David Arnold for sending in these results for tonight’s WWE live event in Cedar Rapids, IA:

This is the third house show in Cedar Rapids I’ve attended since they reopened our arena in 2012. One had Daniel Bryan(c) v. Kane in a WWE title cage match, the other had Alberto Del Rio(c) v. Dolph Ziggler in a World title street fight. Heading into this one, it was advertised to have Kevin Owens (c) v. Dean Ambrose in a IC title “Cedar Rapids Street Fight” as well as Kalisto(c) v. Del Rio in a US title match, however before the show I found out Del Rio had cancelled for some reason (never made clear as to why).

Greg Hamilton and Eden Stiles were the announcers/hosts. Arena is about 9/10ths full as it usually is when it heads here.

* AJ Styles defeated The Miz with his springboard forearm in about 11 minutes in the opener. Miz made a Rick Rude reference in a promo before the match. Styles kicked out of the Skull Crushing Finale at one point. Great back and forth match that looked a lot like their match on Raw a couple of weeks back.

* Darren Young & Jack Swagger defeated Curtis Axel & Adam Rose when Rose tapped to Swagger’s Patriot Lock in about 9 minutes. Darren Young played the “babyface in peril” all match, Swagger was only legally in for the last minute or two. Social Outcasts definitely looked better than Swagger and Young here though.

* Kalisto defeated King Barrett in about 11 minutes after the Salida del Sol to retain the US championship. Guess Barrett was the replacement. Barrett ended up with more and louder chants than Kalisto did with a “Let’s Go Barrett/Barrett Sucks” chant happening most of the match. Barrett controlled most of the match, but had a Bullhammer reversed into the finish.

* New Day (Big E / Xavier Woods) w/ Kofi Kingston(c) defeated The Usos & The Dudleyz after a 3D on an Uso to retain the Tag Team championships. Pre match promo from Kofi talking about Big E playing football and graduating from the University of Iowa, then gladly leaving Iowa. Good comedy bits through the match, including Xavier getting smacked on the back about 15 different times from the Usos and even Big E at one point. Usos and New Day worked most of the match. 3D on one of the Usos followed by Xavier superkicking D-Von out of the ring led to the victory.

Post match The Dudleyz attacked the Usos and asked if the crowd wanted tables, but the Usos fought them off before they went to get any.

Intermission.

* Charlotte defeated Becky with a rollup while holding the tights after about 13 minutes to retain the Divas championship. Crowd was very behind Becky, but there was plenty of “Woos” shouted throughout the match. Good match between the two, proof that they, along with Sasha and a couple of others, are the future of the diva’s division.

* Sheamus defeated Neville with a Brogue kick in about 15 minutes. Sheamus controlled most of the match, but Neville attempted the Red Arrow twice only for Sheamus to stop him before he jumped off the top. Eye poke when backed up into the corner led to the victory. Actually a pretty good match, wish we saw this version of these two on TV more often.

* Dean Ambrose defeated Kevin Owens by DQ, Owens retained the Intercontinental championship. This was originally advertised as a street fight, but after Owens jumped Ambrose to start the match and the ref started counting them out on the outside, it was clear WWE had decided to lie. Decent back and forth match, but clearly not either one’s better efforts. Owens got DQed after Ambrose got tied upside down in the corner and Owens wouldn’t stop attacking him. Post match Owens yelled at the ref for DQing him, did a promo about retaining the title, Ambrose hit Dirty Deeds to send the masses home happy.

Overall, pretty disappointing show, especially being on the “Road to Wrestlemania”. Third best of the three I’ve attended since 2012, not that great.

Match of the night: Styles/Miz

Biggest pops: Ambrose, Styles, Becky

Biggest heat: Miz, Sheamus, Social Outcasts (all of the other heels had a mixed reaction with the CR crowd being more smarks than not)
