WWE Week In Review – February 23rd to March 1st, 2014
It’s been a historic week in the WWE. The road to WrestleMania officially kicked off with the Elimination Chamber PPV on Sunday and the WWE Network launched on Monday. On top of that, Hulk Hogan made his return to the WWE as well as The Undertaker. Needless to say, it’s been a huge week for WWE.
This week started off on Sunday with an incredible Elimination Chamber PPV. It was the best PPV since SummerSlam last August. Nearly every match delivered. Big E and Swagger had a physical battle for the Intercontinental Championship in which Big E came out on top. The Shield and The Wyatt Family had an amazing war that is easily the best match we’ve seen all year. The Elimination Chamber match itself was one of the best in years! Overall, the Elimination Chamber PPV was a huge success.
On Monday night, Raw started off with a bang as Hulk Hogan made his highly anticipated return to the WWE. The show wasn’t as awesome as many expected, but there was alot of good storyline progression. The Wyatt Family attacked Cena and left him injured. Swagger cost Cesaro a match against Big E, which caused more tension between the two. And on top of all of that, The Undertaker made his return at the end of the show to challenge Brock Lesnar to a match at WrestleMania!
Tuesday was the second day of the WWE Universe having full access to the WWE Network, as it launched on Monday. There were some glitches as expected with the start of something so extensive, but aside from that the launch was a huge success. Twitter was filled with happy fans enjoying classic PPV’s and exclusive Network shows throughout the week.
On Thursday night, WWE presented the live two hour NXT special called NXT Arrival. It was an amazing night full of outstanding wrestling. Cesaro and Sami Zayn competed in a match that surpassed their classic from last year. I don’t know how they were able to outdo their previous match, but somehow they did it. That was just the start of the show as Paige and Emma tore the house down in a match that showed how good women’s wrestling can be. The future is bright for both women. The main event of the evening was a Ladder Match between Bo Dallas and Adrian Neville for the NXT Championship. It was a great match in which Neville came out victorious. Outstanding performances all around from every young star on this show.
Despite Raw and Smackdown not having any outstanding matches this week, every other show did. That leads to the Top 5 Matches of the Week list:
5) Adrian Neville vs. Bo Dallas – NXT Arrival – Ladder Match for the NXT Championship
Neville and Dallas are two of the brightest young stars in WWE’s developmental center and they certainly proved so here. Both men put in an outstanding performance. This was a phenomenal match between two future World Champions.
4) Paige vs. Emma – NXT Arrival
And just when everyone was losing hope in the Women’s Division in WWE, these two unbelievably talented competitors come along. Paige and Emma have been the stars of the NXT Women’s Division and they proved exactly why in this match. It was without a doubt one of the best women’s match in the WWE in years. Paige and Emma have a bright future in the WWE.
3) Randy Orton vs. Daniel Bryan vs. John Cena vs. Christian vs. Cesaro vs. Sheamus – Elimination Chamber – Elimination Chamber Match for the WWE Championship
What a wonderful main event this was. Each competitor got their chance to showcase their abilities in this match. There was alot of good action and storytelling as well. Despite Orton winning, the star of this match had to be Cesaro. He delivered an outstanding performance. Then again, every man in this match did. That’s what made it so great.
2) Cesaro vs. Sami Zayn – NXT Arrival
After having a match of the year candidate battle last year in NXT, Cesaro and Sami Zayn set out to prove they could do even better. Somehow, they did just that and produced a match that was even more awesome than their previous bout. The chemistry Cesaro and Zayn have with one another is amazing to watch. Cesaro comes away with the victory, but hugs Zayn afterwards as a show of respect. Awesome match followed by a heartfelt show of sportsmanship.
1) The Shield vs. The Wyatt Family – Elimination Chamber
One word can describe this match – CHAOS. The Shield and The Wyatt Family went to war at Elimination Chamber in a match that had been building for months. I think that was one of the key factors to this match up being so phenomenal. The build towards this clash was outstanding and these young superstars told a great story. If you haven’t seen this match, it’s something you definitely need to check out as it’s one of the best matches so far this year.
As mentioned above, it was a historic week for WWE. The groundbreaking concept of the WWE Network finally launched and did so with great success. On top of that, Hulk Hogan and The Undertaker made their respective returns to the company. Plus the Elimination Chamber was one of the best PPV’s that WWE has produced in months. What’s not to love about all of that? Here’s to more awesome weeks like this!
