AEW commentator Tony Schiavone recently discussed several topics on his podcast, โ€œWhat Happened When,โ€ including his falling out of favor with former WWE Chairman Vince McMahon.

Schiavone said, โ€œThere was a time during my one year, one-plus years there โ€” I guess one year and two months there โ€” that I ran out of favor with Vince. We talked about this, he didnโ€™t like my work all of a sudden.โ€

On McMahon calling him too southern:

โ€œI did SummerSlam. So it was after โ€” it was between SummerSlam and the Survivor Series, that he went, โ€˜Eh, heโ€™s too southern for me.โ€™โ€

On not doing anything wrong:

โ€œWell you know what, when youโ€™re running a company and someone starts to do something the way that you do not like it to be done, I think itโ€™s very hard to go back to that person and say, โ€˜Well, I think heโ€™s getting better.โ€™ I just โ€” thatโ€™s my feeling. Itโ€™s not that I did anything wrong.โ€

On who told him:

โ€œIt came back to โ€” as Bruce Prichard had told me, I sounded too Southern. And I didnโ€™t really think so, but maybe compared to Gorilla Monsoon and Vince, I did. Vinceโ€™s idea was to bring me in and do Superstars, and he quickly shelved that.โ€

On Vince not addressing it:

โ€œIโ€™ll tell you this story, and I know Iโ€™m right about this story: Vince would not tell me himself. With Vince, when youโ€™d ask him, โ€˜Everything was fine.โ€™ But then he would tell Bruce, โ€˜Tell Schiavone I donโ€™t like that.โ€™ I even remember as weโ€™re going to Survivor Series, โ€˜I havenโ€™t heard if whoโ€™s doing commentary, I did SummerSlam and I havenโ€™t heard anything.โ€™ And Nelson Sweglar said, โ€˜Well, itโ€™s Gorilla. Heโ€™s doing it, not you.โ€™ He said, โ€˜Iโ€™ve known that.โ€™ Really?โ€™โ€

On talking with McMahon:

โ€œI went in to see Vince [at a TV taping]. He was looking in the mirror, just washing his hands or something. I said, โ€˜Am I doing Survivor Series?โ€™ And he said, โ€˜We havenโ€™t made that decision yet.โ€™ He had made that decision; he just didnโ€™t want to tell me. Now, does that tell me he was a chickend**k? Many ways you can say that. But I know that throughout history, Iโ€™ve been told thatโ€™s the way they worked in the WWE. Even Vinceโ€™s father โ€” he was always, โ€˜Everythingโ€™s good,โ€™ but he had his guy tell you when something was wrong. And thatโ€™s how Vince worked itโ€ฆ And Iโ€™d heard as time went on, that changed a lot. You know, if he didnโ€™t like something, heโ€™d let you know about it. But back then in โ€™89, he didnโ€™t tell you But thatโ€™s the way it was.โ€
