On Friday, WWE held an episode of SmackDown at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The event sold 15,526 tickets and was headlined by the Undisputed Championship match between CM Punk and local favorite Kevin Owens.
According to Fightful Select, WWE is promoting this episode as the highest-grossing SmackDown ever held in Toronto. Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com also noted that there was a similar sentiment backstage following the show.
Despite the excitement, the Toronto crowd left disappointed as Owens was unable to dethrone Punk as the Undisputed WWE Champion in front of his family, friends, and local fans. This outcome was influenced by Sami Zayn, who struck Owens with the title belt after Owens declined to use it to attack Punk. Unaware of the interference, Punk delivered his signature GTS to secure the pinfall victory. Following the match, Zayn attacked both Punk and Owens, inciting boos from the audience.
