AEW President & CEO Tony Khan always knows how to grab the media’s attention, and the anticipation for tonight’s “Important Announcement” is just one example.
Yesterday Tony Khan sat down with local Phoenix, AZ media outlet, Phoenix New-Times, and hyped up the February 22nd edition of AEW Dynamite as an “exciting development” for the company.
Khan stated: “I can’t tell you right now, but it’s something I’m very excited about and it’s great for the company.” After being pressed if the announcement would lead to a second “Forbidden Door” pay-per-view, Khan would add: “There are a lot of exciting things in the near future for AEW. All I can say is we have an important announcement coming at this show in Phoenix. And it’s an exciting development for the company, and I’m excited to share it with the fans in Phoenix and all over the world.”
It's Wednesday, you know what that means:
Wednesday Night #AEWDynamite
TONIGHT on @TBSNetwork!
We're live at 8pm ET/7pm CT tonight, it's AEW's debut in Phoenix, we'll have a great live crowd for exciting wrestling action + I have an important announcement to make TONIGHT on TBS!— Tony Khan (@TonyKhan) February 22, 2023
All Elite Wrestling first advertised that Tony Khan would have an “important announcement” on February 18th via Twitter. Since the tweet, fans have been feverishly speculating what the announcement could be.
Notable wrestling journalists and insiders have pointed out that the company is using the word “important” rather than “major”. AEW typically uses “major” when discussing newly signed talent, which is leading some to believe the announcement could be business related. However, with Jay White’s recent free-agent status, the strategic wordplay could be nothing more than a red herring.
