A unique 2020 shook up the wrestling format dramatically, but it returned to something wrestling fans were used to in 2021. Even though the year has not ended yet, the wrestling fans have been treated to exceptional matches on pay-per-view mainstays like WrestleMania and Royal Rumble. Here are the most exciting matches of this year:

Men’s Royal Rumble

The Royal Rumble has remained one of the main matches of WWE’s pay-per-view listing. Every wrestling fan enjoys watching as 30 men battle it out for more than an hour until one man is left standing. The winner gets a guaranteed title match at WrestleMania.

This year’s Royal Rumble started with legends Edge and Randy Orton in the first two spots. They had some crazy one-on-ones, which even included a surprise return of Christian, a fan favorite after he retired seven years ago. In the end, Edge emerged the winner after his return, and it was the second time in his career to achieve that.

Besides that, he achieved the milestone of being the third wrestler to win as the number one entrant. It is an impressive achievement for anyone and an excellent addition to his illustrious wrestling career.

Smackdown Women’s Champion Sasha Banks vs. Bianca Belair (Wrestlemania 37)

This was the first solo women’s match to main event a Wrestlemania. Additionally, it ended up being arguably the best match of the entire event. Wrestlemania 37 was also when a live audience returned for the first time after a year.

The main event saw Banks defend the Smackdown Women’s Championship with her trademark cockiness. She came up against the rookie Belair in a typical underdog fight with no twists or gimmicks. It was a purely high-stakes wrestling match.

Both women gave their all with several moments in the match, having fans on the edge of their seats. Belair used her signature ponytail to beat Banks and secure the win.

Universal Champion Roman Reigns vs. Daniel Bryan (Smackdown)

These two wrestlers are arguably the most influential in WWE for the last decade. Roman has been WWE’s leading man since he began. He has dominated nearly all the matchups he has been in. On the other hand, Daniel Bryan was always the underdog. The latter endured several setbacks until he won the historic WrestleMania in 2014.

Their feud started at Elimination Chamber earlier in the year. After that, it continued to Fastlane and WrestleMania. This Smackdown match held on April 30 was the climax of their rivalry. What made the match even more interesting was the fact that if Bryan lost, it would mark the end of his Smackdown career.

It ended up being an exhaustive match in which both men gave their all. It lasted nearly an hour, pushing them to their limits. The end was not so great for Bryan and his fans because he passed out in his submission move as his Smackdown career came to a tragic end. The match remains a clash of the titans and one of the best experiences this year.

Final Thoughts

This year, there were many other entertaining matches, but these three stood out from the rest. However, the year has not ended yet, and fans could experience other epic battles. Which one was your favorite wrestling match this year?
