Billy Gunn Says Teaming With Road Dogg Saved His WWE Career

AEW star and Pro wrestling legend Billy Gunn appeared on Busted Open Radio to talk about a number of topics, including when things started clicking for him in wrestling.

Gunn said, โ€œI think not until me and Road Dogg got togetherโ€ฆbecauseโ€ฆin a sense, I should have never gotten a job at WWE because I was so green, but the stars alignedโ€ฆ all the leashes were offโ€ฆ literally, they handed it to usโ€ฆbecause we were literally about to get fired because they just didnโ€™t have anything. We werenโ€™t going anywhere. We werenโ€™t doing anything.โ€

On how Road Dogg helped him:

โ€œAnd they said, โ€˜Hey, you guys just go do what you want to do. Go be what you want to beโ€ฆโ€™ Road Dogg is so talented, anyway, that he kind of helped me along. He [said], โ€˜Hey, dude, just turn it on. Just be that thing thatโ€™s in you that you wish you could get out,โ€™ and I think that was the โ€˜Mr. A**/Bad A**โ€™ Billy Gunn character.โ€

On training Baron Corbin before Corbin step foot in WWE:

โ€œThe funny thing is Iโ€™ve actually known him before his wrestling career, right before he was going to the [WWE] Performance Centerโ€ฆ now if you know me you know that I hate training football people (laughs), but because theyโ€™re entitled, but you know what, not just because heโ€™s sitting here but he was awesome, he was one of the one that always wanted to learn, always wanted to do- and Iโ€™d always sit in the ring after our classes if he wasnโ€™t in my class cause I knew he was coming.โ€

On teaming with Corbin (Bishop Dyer) at MLP Mayhem:

โ€œIt was kind of along the same feelings as tagging with my kids (Austin and Colten Gunn). The first time I did that and was working with my kids, itโ€™s such a cool experience that a lot of guys- they donโ€™t get to experience that. Right when I thought that my career was complete like it was, I get to compete with my kids and then I get to work with (Dyer)โ€ฆ I feel I can retire like right now and never do this again.โ€
