Death of Wrestling: The Slammys

Greetings to all… It’s David Davis with my weekly blog: Death of Wrestling. For all of those who read this regularly, you will know that this is not a blog about bashing wrestling; it’s a blog of a frustrated fan, who loves the business and wishes that each week it could be a little better.

Just a short one for me as I take a brief opportunity to reflect on this year’s Slammy awards. First and foremost I must say that I really enjoyed them. I remember in years gone by thinking that it’d be better if they were a ‘real’ award ceremony, rather than just being a way to forward the storylines. Having said that, if they had always been fan voted then the amazing Own Hart Slammy storyline would never have happened…

But this year was different (although I have vague recollections of last year’s being fan voted for as well), this year the fans got a chance to really tell the WWE what they think about the product and the Superstars…

For my money, there were quite a few shockers, and I’m sure a lot of the IWC agree with me – The Bellas picking up Diva of the Year and John Cena vs. The Rock winning Match of the Year were up there as jaw dropping moments, and the WWE Universe in attendance also agreed…

But unfortunately, once again, The Slammy’s just proved that the WWE, when it comes to the PG Era, know what’s best for business. I couldn’t work out how these ‘people’ could vote for the Bellas over AJ, but then it hit me… The people who vote on the app are the same people who buy John Cena merchandise and pay for the PPVs, rather than pirate them: the kids…

In one fell swoop, the WWE learnt what the people who actually spend the money think about the product… Unfortunately, kids like the ‘goodies’ and boo the ‘baddies’ and so they are not going to vote for a great heel like AJ Lee, even though, in my humble opinion, AJ Lee is the Diva of the year.

Of course, on the upside, what this means is that it isn’t only the IWC who think that Daniel Bryan is ‘what’s best for business’, the people who spend money, the people who interact on social media, and buy the PPVs also think that Daniel Bryan is The Superstar of the Year.

I do think that the WWE have dropped the ball on this Authority storyline and it seems that the people who the WWE really care about – the kids – also agree. Daniel Bryan should be the face, or at least in the WWE title picture. Despite them generally knowing ‘what’s best for business’ they continually get Daniel Bryan wrong and it’ll be the DoW if the WWE doesn’t listen when its Universe speaks – Yes! Yes! Yes!

That’s all folks… As always, post your comments, thoughts and opinions below! Or message me on twitter and let me know what you think the ‘Death of Wrestling’ is and I might just blog about it!!! Peace and I’m out…
