Is GUNTHER The Unsung Hero Of The WWE Right Now?

Since coming into the WWE back in early 2019, GUNTHER has been proving to the world why he is about as dominant as they come. GUNTHER, then Walter, made his debut in January of 2019, going face-to-face with the NXT UK Champion Pete Dunne on the NXT UK brand.

At NXT TakeOver: New York, Walter defeated Pete Dunne in an absolute barn-burner of a match to become the NXT UK Champion. He would go on to defeat Dunne, ending Dunne’s record-setting 685-day title reign. However, Walter would go on to break that record, holding the title for 870 days before finally dropping the title to Ilja Dragonuv at NXT TakeOver 36.

Walter and Dragonuv would go on to what many people, myself included, called the best match of the year. Walter then would have a quick run on the NXT brand, where he became the beast we know today as GUNTHER. He faced off with some of the top talents there at the time, including Bron Breakker. Breakker would defeat GUNTHER in his final match before he got called up to SmackDown.

In April of 2022, GUNTHER, alongside Ludwig Kaiser, would make their debut on the main roster. He quickly showed fans exactly why he is a beast and made quick work making his way to the Intercontinental Championship. Just two months after he debuted, GUNTHER would defeat Ricochet to become the new Intercontinental Champion and has been holding on to that belt ever since.

Perhaps one of his best matches came at Clash at the Castle where he met Sheamus in a one-on-one match. This match was about as good, and hard-hitting as it could get. He would then go on to continue to make successful defenses against the likes of Rey Mysterio, and Braun Strowman.

Perhaps GUNTHER’s shining moment came at the 2023 Royal Rumble where he proved to be WWE’s ironman yet again. He lasted one hour and 11 minutes, making the final two of the match. He would go on to get eliminated by Cody Rhodes, who won the match after doing so but made him look like an absolute star in the process.

GUNTHER has been the Intercontinental Champion for more than 290 days. However, more importantly than that, he has made the Intercontinental Championship mean something again. At WrestleMania, GUNTHER successfully defended his Intercontinental Championship in a triple-threat match over Drew McIntyre and Sheamus.

This was probably the best match of night two, and maybe even the whole show. GUNTHER has quickly become the unsung hero of the WWE, proving his worth and showing exactly why he is going to be the next big star in the WWE. His hard-hitting, brash style is something a lot of fans love to watch.

His ability to get hit and come back and hit even harder is truly a sight to see. There is even a case to be made that GUNTHER could be the guy to dethrone Roman before all is said and done. All that has to be done now, is making sure he gets some good booking to go along with his very promising character, and that shouldn’t be too hard… Right?
