WWE Hall of Famer JBL appeared on an episode of “Something to Wrestle” with Bruce Prichard, where he discussed several topics, including two of pro wrestling’s biggest cheapskates.
JBL said, “Oh my God, not even close — Dutch Mantell and Teddy Long. Not even close. I mean, not even close.”
On Owen Hart:
“Owen used to ride with fans, but it was almost like a joke to Owen. He’d figure out — Owen would see how little money he could spend. It was almost like a contest for Owen. He enjoyed that. He was kind of cheap, but I think part of it was that Owen enjoyed the idea of, I’m not spending any money.”
On Steve Austin renting a car for $11:
“I remember Stone Cold one time — he’s not cheap, by the way — but he rented a car for like $11 up in Canada. He’s the biggest name in the world, and he’s got this little stick shift car. He’s bragging to everybody about it. Bragging. Eleven dollars.”
On Dutch Mantell’s dinner routine:
“But Dutch Mantell — I don’t like salad, because I’m a man, so I would have my steak and potato, and Dutch would eat my salad. And he would literally order the water and a couple of lemons and make lemonade out of the thing, and that way he never had to pay for a meal.”
On Teddy Long and toll booths:
“And Teddy Long would turn into Galileo going through a toll booth. As soon as you see him, he’d look up at the stars. Teddy, we’re not going to charge you for the freaking toll booth. Teddy owes me and Ron literally millions of dollars in tolls.”
