Jon Moxley to Compete in Another Barbed Wire Match?

A potential Explosive Barbed Wire Match between the legendary Atsushi Onita and AEW’s Jon Moxley in the United States could be in the works.

There have been rumors circulating since last year that Onita would like to compete against Moxley in this match. A recent report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter states that Onita is very interested in competing in the match, but ultimately it will come down to politics.

According to reports, Onita would be willing to compete in AEW for the match. During his most recent trip to the United States, he put out some feelers to AEW about working on AEW TV. It has been stated in the past by AEW President Tony Khan that they would be willing to do a match of this type because of how well the first one did. However, they would want it to be the climax of a feud with their own guys, so it wouldn’t make much sense to do it with Onita.

Moxley does work select indie dates, but AEW must give their approval before. There is no information available regarding whether or not AEW would give the go-ahead for one of their biggest stars to compete in an Explosive Barbed Wire Match outside of the company.

The only Exploding Barbed Wire Death Match in AEW history took place as the main event of the 2021 Revolution pay-per-view, and it resulted in Kenny Omega successfully defending his AEW World Championship against Moxley. The ending was a failure because there was a lacklustre explosion, which led to significant negative feedback being posted online. Despite the fact that the event was considered to have been somewhat successful. AEW extended an invitation to Onita to be a part of the match, but he was unable to make it to the United States because of his commitments and due to COVID-19. Onita did make an appearance in a video package that was created to promote the match; however, he stated that he blamed himself for the weak explosion that took place at Revolution because he was unable to be involved.

Back in May of 2021, Onita introduced a new wrestling promotion known as FMWE (Frontier Martial Arts Wrestling Explosion), which focused on the concept of “Explosion Matches.” Onita prevailed over Matt Tremont in a No Rope Explosion Match that took place on Halloween 2021 in Trenton, New Jersey, and was promoted by both Onita’s FMWE and Tremont’s H2O Wrestling.

At the Grand Slam edition of AEW Dynamite that will take place next Wednesday, Moxley is scheduled to compete against Bryan Danielson for the opportunity to win the vacant AEW World Title.
