Forbidden Door 2, another co-promoted pay-per-view event from AEW and NJPW, will take place on June 25, 2023 at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
The first AEW/NJPW co-promoted event took place in June of last year at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. The main event, in which Jon Moxley defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi to win the interim AEW World Championship, was one of the 13 matches on the card.
Although no matches have been announced as of yet, some wrestlers have already been ruled out from the event because of the promotions they are connected to. Andrade was unable to work the show at the previous event because NJPW refused to put him on the schedule after CMLL claimed he was a AAA wrestler.
NJPW collaborates with CMLL, a Mexican promotion that competes with AAA. Andrade initially worked for CMLL before joining WWE. He didn’t return to CMLL after leaving WWE, he signed with AAA and AEW instead.
Will Ospreay allegedly was stopped from working with MLW on a tour of Mexico in October 2021 by NJPW. The likes of Kenny Omega, FTR, and Sammy Guevara, who have not only competed for AAA but also won championships, are an exception to the rule.
Several wrestlers are not anticipated to be on the card as a result of this problem, according to Dave Meltzer’s report in the most recent Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
Meltzer wrote, “There is a list of AEW talent which I believe would include Bandido, Vikingo, Rush, Komander, Penta, Fenix, Andrade, Dralistico and probably others who aren’t expected to be allowed on Forbidden Door due to New Japan’s strong ties with CMLL. The rules are different if you are Mexican.”
This Sunday, AEW returns to pay-per-view with Double or Nothing.
