AEW star Konosuke Takeshita is reportedly set to enter New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s prestigious G1 Climax tournament this summer, marking another major international spotlight for the rising star.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Takeshita’s appearance on a G1 promotional poster is a strong indication that he will participate in this year’s tournament, with his official inclusion expected to be confirmed at NJPW Dominion on June 15.
“The names in the tournament are going to be announced at Dominion and the lineups shortly after,” wrote Dave Meltzer. “G-1 will be from 7/18 to 8/17, so Takeshita will be absent from AEW during that time frame.”
The G1 Climax is NJPW’s annual round-robin competition that showcases top heavyweight talent from across the globe. The winner traditionally secures a contract to challenge for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom in January.
If confirmed, Takeshita’s participation would further strengthen AEW and NJPW’s working relationship, and provide him with a major platform to elevate his profile against some of the best in the world.
