TERMINOLOGIES IN WWE

WWE employs a variety of special terms in promoting their product, which are:

  • Sports Entertainment

WWE describes the wrestling industry as sports entertainment.

  • WWE Universe

WWE describes its fanbase as the WWE Universe.

  • WWE Superstar

A wrestler is formally called a WWE Superstar

  • WWE Legends

Retired wrestlers are described as WWE legends.

WWE signs most of its talent to exclusive contracts, that is they can only perform on WWE events. They are not allowed to perform for any other promotion unless special arrangements are made in advance. WWE conceals all of its wrestlers’ contract details strictly private.

WWE categorizes its “talents” as independent contractors and not as employees. A study by the University of Louisville Law Review found that after applying the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) 20-factor test, sixteen out of the twenty factors indicate that wrestlers are employees.

However, as a result of the way WWE terms its “talents” as independent contractors, the wrestlers are severed countless benefits that they

would normally be entitled to.

In late 2020, the wrestlers were told by their contractor that they could no longer engage with outside third parties such as Cameo, and that, WWE owns the real names of talent, not just their character names.
