Due to an injury sustained during Friday’s episode of WWE SmackDown, Rey Mysterio was unable to compete in his scheduled match at WrestleMania 41.
Instead, Rey Fenix replaced the WWE Hall of Famer, stepping in to face El Grande Americano. Despite Fenix’s efforts, El Grande Americano emerged victorious. The change came just hours before the show, fueling speculation about the severity of Mysterio’s injury.
On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer confirmed that Mysterio is dealing with a groin injury.
“It was a groin. You were right,” Meltzer told Bryan Alvarez during the broadcast.
Alvarez elaborated on how the injury unfolded:
“So what happened with Rey is we got the report that he got hurt at SmackDown, and he was helped to the back, so everyone immediately thought it had to be a knee injury. I went back and watched SmackDown and couldn’t figure out where he got hurt. Finally, I noticed that when Julius [Creed] pulled Rey out of the ring, Rey turned awkwardly to avoid landing on his stomach, instead landing flat on his back. As soon as he landed, he immediately grabbed toward his groin.”
Meltzer added further details, explaining that Mysterio initially believed he could still wrestle at WrestleMania, but medical evaluations determined otherwise:
“He initially tore his groin. He thought he was going to be able to make the match, but after they examined him, it was clear he just couldn’t go.”
The injury was unfortunate timing, as Mysterio had been scheduled for a high-profile singles match at the event. There is no official word yet on how long the Hall of Famer will be sidelined.
We wish Rey Mysterio a full and speedy recovery.
