WWE SATURDAY NIGHT’S MAIN EVENT RESULTS – DECEMBER 13, 2025
We shoot to Joe Tessitore, who is joined by Big E. and Wade Barrett for the Countdown pre-show. We see several John Cena video packages, all of which were released via WWE’s YouTube channel throughout the week, as well as multiple excerpts from Tom Rinaldi’s interview with Cena.
Backstage, Je’Von Evans and Leon Slater speak live after Cathy Kelley and the rest of the broadcast team roaming the Capital One Arena are introduced. From there, we shift back to the pre-show panel, where Sami Zayn is introduced after a quick check-in from Michael Cole and Stu the Cameraman.
The pre-show returns from a commercial break to Sami Zayn sharing stories and his take on John Cena’s big night. As he is in mid-sentence, Triple H’s theme loudly hits to cut him off. Paul Levesque takes a seat to join them at the panel.
Levesque has microphone problems with his headset, so they give him a hand-held microphone. As he tries talking seriously, with his serious voice, about Cena the man, and him granting so many Make-A-Wishes, etc., he is being drowned out by loud “Spit the water!” chants from the fans, which he completely ignores.
And they lasted a while. As he continued talking, additional “Water! Water”! chants broke out, to no avail. As he was wrapping up, fans again tried outright yelling “We want water!” but again, no dice. Levesque checks out, and Peter Rosenberg checks in to set up a video package on Cena’s throwback jerseys.
Back to the panel, Tessitore, Big E. and Sami Zayn talk among themselves about the actual John Cena vs. Gunther match tonight, and how “The Ring General” has guaranteed to make Cena quit, something he has always refused to do, even making a slogan to back it up over the years.
From there, they throw it backstage, where Trish Stratus is interviewed while in full John Cena gear. She talks highly about “The Greatest of All-Time” and then the panel sends it over to R-Truth. His theme hits and he does a custom freestyle all about John Cena in a tribute fitting for his style.
Truth joins the panel and Rosenberg asks him about the long-rumored airport fight with Cena when R-Truth was the rapping wrestler in TNA and Cena was getting over as the white rapper in WWE around the same time. Truth says it was hog-wash and not true.
An emotional Michael Cole video package airs and then Cole talks in the ring about how much it means to him to call Cena’s final ever match in a WWE ring. He ends up looking in the camera and telling John Cena, “Thank you.” We get more moments and videos and then Lilian Garcia sings the national anthem to end the pre-show.
WWE SATURDAY NIGHT’S MAIN EVENT
After Lilian does an epic job, we shoot to the start of the show, where Joe Tessitore has some audio issues straight out of the gate. We then fade into the elaborate cold open video package narrated by Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque and written by ESPN’s Mark Kriegel.
Fireworks and pyro explode and the camera pans the jam-packed house as Joe Tessitore officially welcomes us to the show from the podium. We see arrival shots backstage of Cody Rhodes, Oba Femi, Bayley, Sol Ruca, AJ Styles and Dragon Lee, Je’Von Evans and Leon Slater, as well as Gunther. Tessitore is joined by Stephanie McMahon live.
Cody Rhodes vs. Oba Femi
Tessitore and Stephanie banter and end with Steph doing Triple H’s “Are you ready?!” to the crowd. The familiar sounds of Cody Rhodes’ theme hits and out comes “The American Nightmare” to a sold out crowd singing along with his catchy-ass entrance tune.
Michael Cole takes over on commentary alongside Wade Barrett, as the Undisputed WWE Champion settles inside the squared circle. One thing is clear from the word “go” tonight — we’ve got an insanely hot crowd and electric atmosphere for the show this evening.
After a healthy pause, the green and red laser-lights begin swirling around and the theme for the intimidating WWE NXT World Champion hits to bring out Cody’s opponent, the one-and-only Oba Femi. He march-struts his way to the ring as always.
The bell sounds and we’re officially off-and-running with our first of four advertised matches for tonight’s historic show. Femi dominates the offense early on. The action spills out to the floor after several minutes of Femi roughing up Rhodes.
On the floor, Femi ends up slamming Rhodes onto the commentary desk, where Rhodes’ ear ends up busted open and bleeding pretty bad. The commentators chalk it up to an uppercut that Femi threw moments earlier. As the action resumes in the ring, Cody begins to take over.
Just as Rhodes starts hitting his trademark spots and doing well, seemingly en route to a win, out of nowhere, Drew McIntyre hits the ring and attacks Rhodes. The referee calls for the bell and this one is thrown out. Femi shoves McIntyre down to his ass. Cody and Femi have a stare down. Cody raises Femi’s hand and they pose with their titles.
Winner: No Contest
Bayley vs. Sol Ruca
We see some more videos honoring John Cena, some more celebrities and notable faces in the crowd, and then we head back down to ringside for our second of four matches. In our second of three WWE vs. NXT “exhibition matches”, we focus on the women.
First out to the ring is Bayley. Cole talks on commentary about Bayley meeting John Cena at an autograph signing before joining WWE, and patterning herself after him early on. She settles in the ring as they praise her for training the next generation of talent.
From WWE NXT, former double champion Sol Ruca makes her way out as Cole and Barrett sing her praises on commentary. Both are in the ring and ready to rock and roll, and the bell sounds to get this one officially off-and-running. The two waste no time and get right at it.
Bayley hooks a side headlock and applies a waist-lock. Ruca tries to fight out, so Bayley hits a headlock takeover. Bayley wrenches the arm, but Ruca does a cartwheel to get out. They go into the ropes, so Bayley drops down. Ruca gets on her hand and walks forward before hitting a head-scissor takeover.
Bayley pops up and wrenches the arm again. Ruca quickly hits an X-Factor, and Bayley rolls out of the ring to recover. Ruca grabs at Bayley, but Bayley snaps her off the middle rope. Bayley goes outside and tries to slide under the turnbuckle, but she comes up short.
Ruca walks on her hands to avoid a shot on the apron. Ruca goes for a moonsault block to the floor, but she lands on her feet when Bayley moves. Bayley then hits her with a forearm to the jaw. My feed cut out for a moment. Ruca hits a cartwheel off the top rope into a DDT for a near fall.
Bayley fires back with a Bayley-to-Belly for a near fall. Bayley gets her in the tree of woe and drops an elbow for a two-count. Bayley goes for a Rose Plant, but Ruca gets out and hits a Shining Wizard for a near fall. Ruca goes to the ropes for a Sol Snatcher, but Bayley counters out and hits a Rose Plant for a close two-count.
Ruca gets a foot on the bottom rope. Bayley furiously punches away at her before hitting a back suplex. Bayley goes to the top rope for a diving elbow drop, but Ruca gets the knees up. Ruca hits a Sol Snatcher, but the impact nearly sends Bayley out of the ring. Back inside, they trade roll-ups until Ruca gets the win.
Winner: Sol Ruca
AJ Styles & Dragon Lee vs. Je’Von Evans & Leon Slater
After some more John Cena tribute videos and a quick commercial break, we shift gears and set our sights on our co-main event, the third of four advertised matches for tonight. It features WWE World Tag-Team Champions AJ Styles and Dragon Lee against TNA X-Division Champion Leon Slater and WWE NXT’s Je’Von Evans.
Michael Cole is shown on camera and he thanks Jim Ross, Jerry Lawler, Taz, JBL and others who helped call some of the matches and moments throughout John Cena’s career. We head back to the podium with Tessitore and Stephanie McMahon recapping what we’ve seen thus far.
The entrances for all four men involved in this one take place and then the bell sounds to get things started. Evans and Slater each run across the ring and hit simultaneous super kicks. They each hit big dives to the floor after that.
In the ring, Slater and Lee kick things off for their respective teams as the first two legal men. Evans tags in and hits a top-rope spot for a two-count of his own. Slater tags back in. Evans whips Slater into Lee. Slater hits a snap-mare for a two-count.
Lee boots Slater away and elbows Evans. Lee sends Slater into the ring post and pulls the top rope down to get Evans out of the ring. Lee goes for a tag, but Slater stops him. Lee flips out of a move and hits a sit-out powerbomb. Styles and Evans tag in. Styles hits Evans with a strike combo, followed by a sliding forearm.
Styles is fired up. Styles avalanches him into the corner with a clothesline, then follows up with an ushigoroshi. Styles hits Slater with a wheelbarrow facebuster. Evans puts Styles on the apron and knocks him to the floor. Styles avoids a baseball slide, but Evans leaps to the bottom rope for a moonsault.
Styles moves and tackles him into the barricade. Lee hits Slater with a hurricanrana off the apron into Styles, who goes for a Styles Clash on the floor. Evans superkicks him and sends Lee into the ring post. Evans gets Styles in the ring and hits an OG Cutter. Slater tags in, and the crowd chants, “This is awesome.”
Slater hits a Swanton 450 Splash for two. Lee dropkicks Evans into Slater to break up the pin. The crowd is chanting, “This is awesome.” Evans superkicks Lee, but Lee knees him in the face. Lee turns him inside out with an elbow to the mouth. Lee hits Evans with a somersault senton plancha.
In the ring, Slater sets up for a Styles Clash on Styles. Styles gets out of it and powers him up for a Styles Clash. Slater gets out of it and drops Styles onto the apron. Styles knocks him back and measures him. Styles goes for a Phenomenal Forearm, but he slips and crashes to the mat! Slater quickly covers for a near fall. Slater heads to the top rope, but Styles powerbombs him out of mid-air before hitting a Styles Clash for the win.
Winners: AJ Styles & Dragon Lee
In The Ring With The Miz, R-Truth & Joe Hendry
Now we head back to the ring. The Miz says it would have been awesome if the Last Time is Now Tour hadn’t pretended he didn’t exist. Miz has been a main character in Cena’s history. Instead, here we are focusing on the up-and-coming superstars.
Meanwhile, the guy who beat John Cena in the main event of WrestleMania in the gear he’s wearing is right here. Miz demands respect. R-Truth, aka Ron Cena, runs down to a huge pop. R-Truth says Miz did something inappropriate with Nick Aldis’s balls.
The Miz took someone’s opportunity, and that person is, Joe Hendry. Say his name, and he appears. Joe Hendry appears on the apron to a HUGE reaction. Miz is furious. The crowd loudly sings Hendry’s theme song. Miz goes after Hendry, but Hendry fights back and hits a fall-away slam.
Hendry and R-Truth then pose in the ring. They then do John Cena’s “You Can’t See Me” taunt and give Miz the 10 Knuckle Shuffle. Hendry lifts Miz for a Standing Ovation. Hendry covers, and R-Truth counts the pin. R-Truth and Hendry pose in the ring.
JOHN CENA VS. GUNTHER
It’s main event time!
John Cena’s WWE retirement match is up next. After another touching tribute video airs, and another quick commercial break, all sights get set on the reason 19,000+ are packed inside the Capital One Arena, and millions are watching Peacock at home right now.
John Cena goes one-on-one with “The Ring General” Gunther in his last match ever. We get another check in with Tessitore and Stephanie and then another tribute video airs. Gunther’s theme hits and the crowd boos as loud as you’ve ever heard nearly 20,000 people boo.
The former Imperium leader settles into the ring to some more loud hate and then his music dies down. We get a super long healthy pause and then the lights go out. The crowd goes wild. The horns hit and out comes John Cena with Stu the Cameraman all up in his grill.
Cena soaks in the atmosphere and then gives Stu a hug or a kiss. He takes the camera from Stu and pans around the fired-up crowd. He hands the camera back. He says he’s going down swinging and says it’s time to go to work one last time. He begins his run, with Stu sprinting behind him.
In the ring, Cena plays to the crowd, who are loudly chanting “Cena!” His music dies down and super loud “Let’s go Cena!” chants break out, but are not followed by the usual equally loud “Cena sucks!” ones. It’s all respect tonight, folks.
Lilian Garcia does the final formal pre-match ring introductions for the man of the hour and his opponent. The bell sounds and we’re officially off-and-running with our final match of the evening. It’s the last time John Cena is in his work jorts and sneakers in front of the world.
Cena circles the ring before locking up with The Ring General. The crowd is absolutely buzzing. They break apart, and Cena looks around at the crowd. Cena, in his trademark jorts, starts to circle around Gunther again. Gunther goes to the apron, and the crowd boos.
Gunther gets back in the ring, and they lock up. Gunther powers Cena down and stomps him as the crowd chants, “A**hole.” Gunther stomps Cena as the crowd chants something even more vulgar. Gunther rocks the chest of the G.O.A.T. with a vicious chop.
Gunther chops the 17-time World Champion a second time, and Cena collapses to the mat. Gunther pulls Cena to his feet and chops him back down. The crowd chants, “You tapped out,” referencing him losing to Jey Uso via Submission at WrestleMania earlier this year, costing Gunther the World Heavyweight Championship.
Gunther hits Cena with a scoop slam and whips him HARD into the corner. Cena falls to the mat. The crowd chants, “Let’s go, Cena.” Cena blocks a chop and punches away at Gunther. Gunther reverses a whip, but Cena ducks a clothesline and hits a pair of diving shoulder tackles.
Cena hits the third move of doom, the Protobomb/back suplex powerbomb. Cena tells Gunther, “You Can’t See Me,” and hits the 5 Knuckle Shuffle. Cena sets up for an Attitude Adjustment, but Gunther gets out and hits a German Suplex. Gunther runs him over with a clothesline and applies a Sleeper Hold.
Cena gets out with a snapmare and applies an STFU! Gunther screams in pain and starts to claw for the ropes. Cena cranks back on Gunther’s head before releasing to pull him into the center of the ring. Gunther kicks him away and hits a Tyrannosaurus Dropkick. Gunther follows up with a stiff Powerbomb before signaling for the end.
Gunther goes to the corner and sizes Cena up as he begins to stir. Gunther waits for Cena to get to his feet and runs the G.O.A.T. over with a clothesline. Gunther shouts at the referee and says Cena will give up tonight. Gunther hits the ropes and runs Cena over with another clothesline.
The crowd is loudly booing The Ring General. Gunther looks down at Cena before hitting the ropes to hit another clothesline. Gunther continues to talk trash. Cena slowly gets up, and Gunther hits his fourth clothesline in a row. The crowd chants, “A**hole.” Gunther hits the ropes as Cena gets up and hits a fifth clothesline.
Gunther says it’s the end for Cena. Cena is slowly stirring, but he’s having trouble getting up. Cena ducks a sixth clothesline and hits a pair of diving shoulder tackles, followed by a back suplex powerbomb. We see perhaps the final 5 Knuckle Shuffle of his career before lifting Gunther for an AA for a two-count.
Fans again chant “Super Cena” as he tries one more time to take over after surviving another close finishing sequence from Gunther. Gunther ignores the crowd, stalks Cena, waits for him to get up and slaps the sleeper hold on him. Cena begins to fade. Cena puts his arm up to show he’s still alive. He stands up.
“Super Cena” nearly emerges per the fans request, as he peals the hands away from Gunther’s face. Gunther squeezes back down on the sleeper hold and Cena’s arms drop. Cena begins to fade again. Fans chant his name like crazy and Cena gets another second wind. He powers all the way out this time, but Gunther slaps it back on.
Cena fades again. He is once more brought to life by the electric crowd chanting his name. He stands all the way up. Gunther jumps on Cena’s back and keeps the hold on. Cena again powers up and backs Gunther into the corner to free himself. He turns around and Gunther slaps the sleeper right back on. Cena fades.
Cena powers up yet again and escapes. Gunther goes to slap it back on, but Cena counters and hits an AA for a super close two-count. Gunther immediately pounces and slaps the sleeper right back on Cena again. Fans literally loudly chant “Don’t give up!” Cena starts trying to fire up again.
He crumbles back down. His arms drop. The referee checks it once. It drops. A second time. It drops. Fans loudly chant “Don’t give up!” again. On the third check, Cena’s arm stays up with the three-finger “okay” sign Cena uses. Gunther puts it back on again and Cena fades. He smiles and goes out. Gunther wins. The crowd is dead silent.
Winner: Gunther
John Cena Says Goodbye To WWE
After the match, fans loudly chanted “Bullsh*t! Bullsh*t!” The entire locker room came out, led by Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. Cody Rhodes and CM Punk went into the ring and gave Cena their belts. He posed with them as the entire locker room surrounded the ring and fans chanted “Thank you, Cena!” He watched a special tribute video, bowed to the crowd on all four sides, took his sneakers and wrist bands off and walked away for the last time.
