WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry discussed several topics with Clutch Points, including his views on nepotism in professional wrestling.
Henry said, “No, it’s good, I mean, Charlotte Flair, Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, Dominik Mysterio. Like, you can go down the list; there are 10 or 15 wrestlers whose father or mother was involved in the industry. And when you know and understand the terminologies, and you know what the travel is gonna be like, because as a kid, you actually did some of it with your parents. Like, there, there’s a lot of stuff that all of the people in the office know: they know who you are, and they know that if you make a mistake, that it’s okay for them to go, ‘Hey, I’m a little worried about Jacob [For example]. You might wanna talk to him about, ‘Jacob, he don’t want that.’ He wants everything to be good, and he’s gonna work like he wants everything to be good. I think that is an advantage because people that know me know that I’m about business. I’m about the industry, how to make things better, how to increase relationships. That’s what my son is. He’s a reflection of me, and he knows how sensitive I am to philanthropy, and picking up the mantle for helping people that don’t have anything. So he’s gonna do more than his share because he knows who his father is and what his father did to help the industry, and he’s gonna be a part of that.”
On how people reacted to the Avery Styles controversy:
“I thought that people jumped to the conclusion. You gotta remember that these are kids, and that they’re young, and sometimes you, you tend to wanna do what you wanna do rather than what’s good for everyone, and sometimes you don’t know what’s good for you to do. So I don’t harp on the negativity. I just look at it as it should be a learning experience, and that everybody should go from the ‘I’m sorry,’ to ‘Now let’s do better.’”
On Avery Styles signing with TNA Wrestling:
“I thought it was good. I’m always glad to hear that a wrestler got a job, because that means that they’re gonna be used, that they’re gonna get a chance to prove in front of an audience that they are worthy of the attention that they get. I think they’ll be happy with him because he’s athletic. He comes from pro wrestling. He’s a legacy kid, so people automatically gonna wanna see him just so they can compare him to his father. That’s just human nature. He’s gonna have every opportunity to prove that he is his father’s son. And everybody that’s not legacy, that’s one element that they don’t have, so, you know, he’s got an advantage. Avery Styles needed TNA. It’s like getting a brand new car. And the last car you had, you barely could make it one block without it overheating, and you have to raise the hood and pour water in it to cool it off. Like, now It’s brand new. So you have a new place to drive around and show everybody what you’re worth.”
