Joe Alonzo Discusses His Relationship With Billy Corgan

Indie star Joe Alonzo recently spoke with MuscleManMalcolm on a number of topics including his relationship with NWA owner Billy Corgan.

Alonzo said, โ€œIโ€™ve always liked Billy. Heโ€™s a little weird, and I told Billy this to himself, heโ€™s a really weird guy. But heโ€™s been famous since he was 19 years old, so I get it. As far as, I like that Billy is very blunt. In a very blunt person, so he doesnโ€™t sugarcoat anything. Whateverโ€™s on his mind, he says. That rubs people the wrong way, [but] it doesnโ€™t for me. Sometimes I think he doesnโ€™t know, I donโ€™t think heโ€™s smart in our world as much as he thinks he is. Iโ€™ll say this, sometimes Billy would say things to me, Iโ€™m like, โ€˜Oh, I like Billy.โ€™ Then Billy would say other things. Iโ€™m like, โ€˜Were you dropped on your head? Whoโ€™s taking bumps here, me or you?โ€™ He told me, I canโ€™t say who was there for this conversation, but he goes, โ€˜I donโ€™t know, I think itโ€™s working up whoโ€™s gonna earn the next title shot for Colby Corino. Itโ€™s gonna be between you and another wrestler.โ€™ I say, โ€˜Okay.โ€™ Heโ€™s like, โ€˜I havenโ€™t decided if itโ€™s gonna be you or him yet. I think right now heโ€™s killing it, heโ€™s a better heel than you are by far.โ€™ I looked at him, Iโ€™m like, โ€˜Are you okay?โ€™ I straight up told him, โ€˜Thatโ€™s cool. I get thatโ€™s your opinion, but your opinionโ€™s wrong. Youโ€™re wrong.โ€™ I know thatโ€™s wild to tell your boss, but Iโ€™m sorry, youโ€™re wrong. Youโ€™re crazy if you think that.โ€™ I think he respected that I was very honest with my opinion on things. I think the people who were in his ear didnโ€™t like that I was honest. Maybe this is most companies, but at least for the NWA, I think they donโ€™t like when people talk back, and I donโ€™t think itโ€™s telling back. If you read the contract, the contracts say itโ€™s a partnership. Iโ€™m not your employee. Im not getting healthcare, I have no benefits. So Iโ€™m not your employee. We are a partnership, and weโ€™re doing this together. So if I think something would be better this way, Iโ€™m not saying we have to, Iโ€™m just throwing a suggestion. Donโ€™t get offended that Iโ€™m throwing a suggestion out there. But it was just weird.โ€

On getting along with Corgan:

โ€œI will say, I think outside of wrestling, me and Billy would get along great, and Billy has said himself that I remind him a lot of his younger self. Weโ€™re both from Chicago and both very goal-driven and ambitious and very blunt, so sometimes those people mesh well together, and sometimes they kinda bump heads. So I think if you take a project or take something out of the equation, if you just have us sit in the same room and chop it up and shoot the shit, I think weโ€™d get along great. But I sent him a message right after I made the announcement and said that Iโ€™m a free agent. I just sent a thank you, and he just said he wishes me my best on everything, and I wished him the best for the NWA. Me and Billy are great. The other people, not so much. But me and Billy, the boss, we have a good relationship.โ€
