While appearing on the Stories with Brisco and Bradshaw podcast, Dark Side of the Ring co-creator Evan Husney revealed a never-before-heard story involving Brian Pillman, his manager Kim Wood, and a wildly extreme publicity stunt suggested by none other than Terry Funk.
As Husney explained, Pillman and Wood were looking for unconventional ways to blur the lines of reality and further enhance the mystique of Pillman’s infamous “Loose Cannon” character. That led to a now-legendary idea from Funk that was as chaotic as it was headline-worthy.
“There’s a famous story where Terry Funk… came up with this elaborate scheme for Brian to get lots of, like, free publicity,” Husney said. “He was going to have Kim Wood give Brian his Super Bowl credentials… and Brian would sneak onto the field during the game and chain himself to the goalpost.”
The idea? Disrupt the Super Bowl in front of a massive national audience, generating a media storm and unmatched exposure for Pillman’s character.
“It’ll take them 15-20 minutes to get him out of there,” Husney continued, “but he’ll get national exposure… money can’t buy that.”
Despite the spectacle such a stunt might have created, Kim Wood ultimately shut it down.
“Kim’s like, ‘I’m not doing that. They trace every pass back to whomever, and that’s gonna mess me up,’” Husney noted.
Co-host John “Bradshaw” Layfield (JBL) couldn’t help but laugh at the story, chiming in with:
“Terry Funk can come up with some of the worst ideas in the history of the world… but also some of the best.”
While the plan never came to fruition, the story underscores the extreme lengths Pillman and his circle were willing to go to reinforce the “Loose Cannon” image—driven by Funk’s unfiltered imagination and penchant for chaos.
