WWE’s decision to have The Rock face his cousin instead of Cody Rhodes challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Title at WrestleMania 40 was not well received by everyone.
There was speculation leading up to the Royal Rumble that WWE might be able to get The Rock to participate. Following Cody Rhodes’ victory in the Men’s Royal Rumble Match and his declaration that he was going after Reigns at Mania, things appeared straightforward. WWE backed off on RAW before having Rhodes appear on Friday’s SmackDown.
On the show, Rhodes told Reigns that he was coming for him and planned to take everything from him, but not at WrestleMania, before introducing Rock, who had a showdown with Reigns.
As PWMania.com previously stated, the match has yet to be officially announced, but it is expected to take place on Thursday at a press conference in Las Vegas. The decision to change the main event was made in recent days, as Dave Meltzer reported Rhodes vs. Reigns was planned for the night of the Rumble and Monday.
It changed the next day, as The Rock reportedly pushed hard for it. It appears that Rhodes will officially challenge Rollins for the World Heavyweight Championship at Mania.
The WWE’s YouTube channel posted a clip of the showdown, and there were over 50% more dislikes than likes on YouTube.
