Professional wrestling is already a tough industry to break into, but for international talent trying to make it in the United States, the challenges can be even greater. TNA star Steph De Lander recently appeared on The Wrestling Life with Ben Veal podcast and candidly discussed the financial and emotional toll of maintaining her U.S. visa status.
The Australian-born wrestler revealed the staggering costs she’s faced over the past several years just to remain eligible to work in the U.S.
“I’ve spent probably at least 25 to 30 grand on my visa in the last four years, just so I can live here,” De Lander stated. “And I don’t have a green card. I’m not a citizen. I’m still on, like, the base level… an athlete in America visa.”
De Lander also opened up about the terrifying uncertainty that followed her WWE release, noting how difficult it is for international performers without corporate sponsorship or support.
“You are truly up a creek without a paddle when you get released as a foreigner,” she said. “You completely have to rely on other people… it’s all word of mouth.”
She specifically credited Chelsea Green and Matt Cardona for helping her navigate the process and keep her dreams alive.
“I will never be able to repay back Chelsea and Matt for everything that they’ve done for me… they really came through.”
Now a rising presence on TNA Wrestling, De Lander continues to make the most of her opportunity — but her journey highlights the hidden obstacles many international wrestlers face behind the scenes.
