Adam Copeland has revealed that he considered the significance of appearing during John Cena’s WWE retirement run, but ultimately never explored the possibility because he believed WWE would not have been interested in making it happen.

Speaking with Ariel Helwani, the AEW star reflected on his legendary rivalry with Cena and was asked whether he ever thought about making a one-off appearance given how closely their careers were connected.

Helwani acknowledged the obvious contractual complications but questioned whether Copeland had entertained the idea.

Ariel Helwani: “In that same vein, just curious. I know probably a long shot, but when Cena was doing his whole year-long retirement, you were so linked to him. Was there ever a part of you that thought, ‘Ah, that would be pretty cool to just show up and do something.’ I know it’s impossible. I know those doors don’t link to each other, but did the thought run through your mind?”

Copeland responded by suggesting that the divide between WWE and AEW did not necessarily make such a collaboration impossible. In his view, only one side would have prevented it.

Adam Copeland: “Well, here’s what I realized. They could link to each other. One place doesn’t want it to. So, okay.”

When Helwani asked whether Copeland believed AEW President Tony Khan would have approved an appearance, Copeland was unequivocal.

Ariel Helwani: “You think if you would have gone to Tony [Khan], he would have been okay with it?”

Adam Copeland: “Absolutely. I truly believe that. The other side knows what it would have meant to a very large segment of the wrestling fan.”

Helwani then directly asked whether Copeland believed WWE would have rejected the idea.

Ariel Helwani: “But you think the other side would have said no.”

Copeland said he did, although he also acknowledged that he could understand the situation from multiple perspectives.

Adam Copeland: “Yeah. Yeah, I do. I can see it from all sides. I really can. John knew I was there in spirit, and him and I experienced the fact that we kind of made our bones on each other, and we’re both aware of that fact. Like, both of our careers would have been great. But I think that angle, that story, those two opponents kind of propelled us to a place, to a different place.”

Copeland and Cena were two of WWE’s defining rivals during the mid-to-late 2000s. Their feud became a pivotal chapter in both careers, producing several memorable matches and moments while helping establish Copeland as a permanent fixture at WWE’s main-event level.

Despite that history, Copeland confirmed that he never formally approached either company about becoming involved in Cena’s retirement run.

Ariel Helwani: “Did you even explore it?”

Adam Copeland: “No. I assumed that it—and a lot of these are assumptions. But having been there long enough and kind of knowing how the mindset is there, I realized it ain’t going to happen.”

Copeland was careful to clarify that his belief about WWE’s position was an assumption rather than something he had been directly told. No proposal was formally made, meaning neither WWE nor AEW was actually presented with the opportunity to approve or reject an appearance.

Nevertheless, Copeland believes Khan would have been open to the idea and acknowledged what a reunion between the longtime rivals could have meant to wrestling fans.

While both men went on to achieve enormous success independently, Copeland clearly views their rivalry as an important turning point for each of them, crediting their work together with helping elevate both careers to another level.
