Despite WWEโs recent acquisition of Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, the company reportedly has no interest in utilizing Alberto El Patron (formerly known as Alberto Del Rio), according to a new report from Bodyslam.net.
Sources within WWE have confirmed that the companyโs long-standing position regarding El Patron remains unchanged. WWE has not contacted the former World Heavyweight Champion, has no creative plans for him, and does not intend to include him in any future programming โ even though his AAA contract is now technically under WWE ownership following the buyout.
WWE has already begun distancing itself from El Patron in AAA-related storylines. Notably, El Hijo del Vikingo was booked to defeat El Patron for the AAA Mega Championship, a title that Vikingo went on to successfully defend at Triplemania Regia.
El Patron previously competed in WWE during two separate stints (2009โ2014 and 2015โ2016), where he captured multiple championships. However, his post-WWE career has been overshadowed by controversy, including aggravated kidnapping and sexual assault charges in 2020 โ charges that were ultimately dismissed.
While WWE continues to explore its new partnership with AAA, it appears El Patron will not be part of those plans.
