Tony Schiavone doesn’t envision himself retiring.
On the latest episode of his “What Happened When” podcast, the AEW commentator was asked what he would want the end of his legendary pro wrestling career to look like.
“I would say, โHi everybody, welcome to another episode of [makes croaking sound],'” Schiavone said. “Yeah [when Thompson asked if he would die in the seat.] That doesnโt mean Iโm gonna be 80 when I do it. I donโt think Iโm slowing down. I just donโt think Iโm slowing down. Iโm really honored that Tony would allow me to do play-by-play again at this stage in my life. Right now, Iโm 66. I turned 66 on November 7th. I still gotโฆrealistically, I think Iโve got one more contract in me, if Tony will go with that, and then weโll see what happens.”
Schiavone continued, “I just donโt envision myself retiring. Thatโs why, when we started doing [AEW Collision], and this is before Tony put me on the broadcast team, Tony told me, he said, โWeโre gonna start doing a Saturday show.โ He said, โYou donโt have to come.โ He said, โWeโre can have two different crews. Iโm the only one whoโs gotta come.โ I said, โTony, Iโm going to be here every day for you. Iโll be here on Wednesdays, and Iโll be here on Saturdays.โ Itโs a case of just being away two nights out of the week. He said, โOkay.โ But then I got to thinking, itโs like, if Iโm not doing it, what am I gonna do? Just sit at home and do nothing? Thatโs not me at all.”
