On a recent episode of his 1 Of A Kind podcast, WWE Hall of Famer Rob Van Dam (RVD) revealed he sustained a significant injury during his match against Matt Riddle at MLW Battle Riot VII.
RVD detailed how the injury occurred:
“A couple weeks ago I had a match in MLW. A lot of people saw that. A lot of people don’t know that I got hurt because it was the very last move in the night. I went up to the top rope and Matt Riddle pushed me off, and the way I land on my feet normally, I kind of hug the guard rail and my weight goes into it. This one, I must have misjudged it a little bit, and I just landed on my feet and both heels blew.”
Initially, RVD believed the damage was less severe:
“I thought that my ankles were sprained. I crawled out of there. I haven’t been able to walk since. I got X-rays and both heels are broken.”
Despite the serious nature of the injury, RVD downplayed it with his usual resilience:
“It’s not something that I’m not used to. I kind of routinely go through this thing.”
However, the injury has forced major changes to his schedule:
“Man, it definitely made me cancel a lot of plans that I had for the next few months.”
Still, RVD pushed through the pain to honor prior commitments:
“But WrestleCon and WrestleMania week, I made it through all the obligations.”
