A feature-length biopic chronicling the life and legacy of Ronda Rousey โ former UFC champion and WWE Superstar โ is officially moving forward, with Netflix at the helm and a director now attached to the project.
According to Deadline, acclaimed filmmaker Augustine Frizzell has signed on to direct the highly anticipated adaptation of Rouseyโs bestselling memoirs. The film is being produced by Chernin Entertainment, with Netflix distributing the final product.
What makes this project especially notable is Rouseyโs deep creative involvement. After studying screenwriting through WMEโs story group, Rousey took matters into her own hands. Reportedly unsatisfied with several previous drafts, she wrote the final script herself โ completing it in just seven days โ before the project was taken to market.
The search for a female director to authentically helm the story was extensive, but Frizzell emerged as the top choice. A longtime fan of Rousey and a Muay Thai practitioner herself, Frizzell impressed producers with her vision and personal understanding of the fighterโs journey. Her directing credits include A24โs โNever Goinโ Backโ, the pilot episode of HBOโs โEuphoriaโ, and Netflixโs โThe Last Letter from Your Lover.โ
The film will draw from both of Rouseyโs autobiographies โ โMy Fight / Your Fightโ and the more recent โOur Fight.โ This means fans can expect a comprehensive and unflinching look at Rouseyโs rise through MMA and WWE, as well as the deeply personal struggles she has publicly faced โ including her devastating first loss in the Octagon, her battles with concussions, and her emotional journey of recovery and resilience.
With Rouseyโs legacy as a trailblazer in both MMA and pro wrestling, this biopic is shaping up to be one of the most compelling sports dramas in recent memory.
