During a recent appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, former WCW President Eric Bischoff made headlines with a bold prediction: TNA Wrestling could overtake AEW as the number two wrestling promotion in North America by next year.
Bischoff praised TNAโs recent momentum, including their record-breaking Slammiversary event, and lauded the companyโs โquiet, incremental growthโ under its current leadership.
โI was texting back and forth with Carlos [Silva] an hour agoโฆ I reached out and said, โHey, congratulations on what you did.โ They had a big night last night, great turnout, and theyโre making a lot of smart decisions,โ Bischoff said. โTheyโre growing incrementally, and theyโre doing it almost quietlyโฆ producing great shows, bringing in great talent, and growing their business.โ
Bischoff emphasized that TNAโs biggest obstacle remains its current broadcast reach, and suggested the company is โone deal awayโ from making a serious leap forward.
โIf they get a broadcast partner, if they get the right broadcast situationโฆ because theyโve got the product, they know what theyโre doing, thereโs a good team of people. They just need a bigger platform. And if they get itโwatch them take off.โ
When asked point blank if TNA could pass AEW by this time next year, Bischoff didnโt hesitate: โBy this time next year? I think so. It depends on the TV deal. If the TV deal isnโt a big one, that will be tough, damn near impossible. But with the right television partner, theyโre number two this time next year.โ
โNot for that 10% hardcore sicko that everybody thinks is a cool demo.โ
Bischoff also took a not-so-subtle jab at AEWโs creative direction, stating that TNA is doing a better job appealing to the general wrestling audience. โTheyโre doing the basics and producing a show for the mainstream wrestling audience,โ he said. โNot for that 10% hardcore sicko that everybody thinks is a cool demo.โ
He went on to say that TNA has the potential to โbe number two in a minuteโ if they continue on their current path with the right broadcast partner.
WWE-TNA Partnership Not About AEW?
As for theories that WWEโs ongoing relationship with TNA is meant to weaken AEW, Bischoff dismissed that notion. Instead, he believes itโs more of a legal safeguard on WWEโs part.
โI think what they are trying to do is position themselves to not end up in another antitrust lawsuitโฆ by supporting, being in business with other organizations. Itโs a cover-your-ass legal strategy,โ Bischoff theorized. โI really donโt think WWE spends a lot of time thinking about how to compete with AEW.โ
