AEW held its highly anticipated Grand Slam: Mexico event this past Wednesday night at Arena Mexico, showcasing top talent from both All Elite Wrestling and CMLL. The show was headlined by a star-studded 10-Man Tag Team Match featuring The Young Bucks, Jon Moxley, Wheeler Yuta, and The Beast Mortos taking on Will Ospreay, Swerve Strickland, and The Opps.
According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the event was regarded as a major success by both AEW and CMLL, and served as a career highlight for many AEW wrestlers. Several talents likened competing in Arena Mexico to performing in other globally iconic venues such as Madison Square Garden, Wembley Stadium, and Tokyo Dome.
For many, this was their first opportunity to wrestle inside the legendary Arena Mexico, and in doing so, several AEW stars joined the exclusive “big four club” — wrestlers who have competed in all four of these historic venues. Among those who achieved this milestone at Grand Slam: Mexico were: Mercedes Moné, Will Ospreay, Brody King, Ricochet, and Adam Cole.
They now join an elite group that includes names such as John Tenta, Road Warrior Animal, Juice Robinson, Chris Jericho, Jon Moxley, Rocky Romero, Jay Lethal, Tomohiro Ishii, Kazuchika Okada, Zack Sabre Jr., Mark Briscoe, Bryan Danielson, and Claudio Castagnoli.
While FTR was in line to be the first tag team to achieve this feat, Cash Wheeler was unable to participate in the event, leaving Dax Harwood to reach the milestone on his own. Notably, Dustin Rhodes would have joined the list had he been booked for the event.
Tony Schiavone also made history by becoming the first and only announcer to broadcast from all four iconic arenas. Jim Ross, who is currently recovering from colon cancer, would have joined him had he been able to call the show.
The event was seen as a symbolic and celebratory moment for AEW’s growing global presence and its historic collaboration with CMLL.
